*Goodbye HoloLens? A $22 Billion Missed Opportunity* The whispers have grown louder, and the signs are increasingly clear: the future of Microsoft's HoloLens looks bleak. Reports of widespread device discontinuation and dwindling technical support paint a picture of a product struggling to find its place. But perhaps the biggest blow came with the loss of the US Military's Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) contract – a deal estimated to be worth a staggering $22 billion. While HoloLens found some traction in the enterprise market, the IVAS contract was arguably its lifeline. It represented a massive investment and a chance to solidify HoloLens as a leader in the mixed reality space. Its loss leaves a significant void, especially as the market becomes increasingly competitive. What makes this story even more compelling is the rise of Anduril, the defense technology company founded by Palmer Luckey. For those who remember the early days of VR, Luckey's name is synonymous with Oculus, the VR startup acquired by Facebook (now Meta). After his departure from Oculus, Luckey shifted his focus to defense, and now, his company, Anduril, is poised to take over the reins of the IVAS project. It's a fascinating turn of events. Anduril Industries will essentially be building upon the foundation laid by Microsoft's HoloLens, taking the technology in a new direction. This begs the question: What went wrong for Microsoft? Was it a failure to adapt to the evolving needs of the military? Were there technical challenges that couldn't be overcome? Or was it simply outmaneuvered by a more agile and innovative competitor?
