The AI Labs family is growing and we're excited to introduce our new colleague Nine Corten! 🚀Real progress happens when science and practice come together. That’s exactly what excites me: connecting people, ideas, and opportunities to create a positive impact. I’m very happy to share that I’ve joined Utrecht AI Labs as Coordinator of External Affairs! At Utrecht AI Labs, we bridge the gap between research and real-world applications, using #AI and #datascience to tackle major societal challenges. From smart mobility solutions to innovations in animal welfare and AI-driven techniques to enhance safety in the Netherlands, we focus on making a difference. My mission is to connect researchers with organisations, build a strong network, and grow and strengthen the AI #community. In my previous roles in relationship and stakeholder management, I’ve learned how powerful true collaboration can be, even in complex environments. I believe that lasting relationships are built on trust, enthusiasm, and a shared drive to make the world a better place. And that’s exactly the energy I aim to bring to this role. Above all, I'm really looking forward to working with my #team. Working alongside skilled, passionate, and driven colleagues, I get to combine strategic thinking with a hands-on approach. That gives me energy!💡 Curious about what we can do for you or your organisation? I’m very much looking forward to connect. Feel free to check out https://lnkd.in/eGEFXawZ or reach out to me directly. Talk to you soon! Congratulations to Floris Bex on being appointed Professor of Innovation in #AI & #Law at Utrecht University on March 1! The use of artificial intelligence in the legal sector is growing enormously; from smart crime report intake to algorithms that help analyse contracts. But how reliable and transparent are these systems? And what does this mean for the role of judges, lawyers, civil servants and the police? With his chair, Bex wants to strengthen the scientific basis of AI in the legal field by looking at the development, use, and impact of this technology. His specialisation is argumentation theory: how do professionals such as judges and investigators reason, and how can AI support such reasoning? “Legal AI systems must reason and act transparently and in accordance with the law,” Bex says. “We observe that popular AI - language models and chatbots like (Chat)GPT – are not very good at logical reasoning, or applying specific laws. By using insights from argumentation theory on what correct legal reasoning is, we can ensure that AI behaves logically and according to the law.” AI Labs (Utrecht University) Read more on Bex' work: https://lnkd.in/e9JcVq8g #uuscience #InformationandComputingSciences #SchoolofLaw #NationalPoliceLabAI

Last week, I had the opportunity to join a roundtable session with elected representatives from cities across Provincie Utrecht, alongside leaders from (higher) education, research organizations, and industry. Our focus: strengthening collaboration in our dynamic knowledge economy and tackling the shared challenges of digital transformation and AI. At Utrecht University, we’re already deeply engaged in this space. Through initiatives like Datawerkplaats, Data School, and our AI Labs (Utrecht University), we work closely with government bodies, businesses, and applied sciences colleagues to drive responsible innovation. Two key takeaways stood out from our discussion: 🔹 AI must be a matter of public interest, grounded in EUropean values. 🔹 We need to evade from dependency on US Big Tech to ensure greater technological sovereignty. We are committed to put our expertise to work and collaborate with others towards these objectives! Thanks, dr.Rob Peters en André van Schie for making this conversation possible!

Analysing eighteen thousand chicken videos Artificial intelligence can take over a lot of work from us. But what is still occasionally forgotten is that training all these AI models can require very much manual labour. One of these AI trainers is participation employee Armanda den Exter, whose work in the AI Lab for Animal Welfare included labelling thousands of chicken videos from chickens in the henhouse. “Without Armanda and her colleague, this research would be barely feasible.” The use of cameras and sensors has already been a well-tested method to measure animal behaviour for some time, but this was mostly about group behaviour and simple motion detection until recently. Thanks to AI, the behaviour of individual chickens in a big group can now be analysed. “The AI models are trained to differentiate between chickens and to recognise various behavioural patterns, such as scratching or eating,” Professor Bas Rodenburg, one of the head researchers of the AI & Animal Welfare Lab, tells. This way, there can be a timely intervention if a chicken is showing problematic behaviour, such as pecking or ‘piling’. In the latter, the chickens get together in a big pile, resulting in the suffocation of the animals at the bottom. A big problem in practice, Rodenburg notes. The final goal of the research is to select chickens who feel comfortable in big groups and display positive behaviour. Rodenburg says: “These chickens can be used to provide the next generation of laying hens; this is why the AI Lab collaborates with breeding company Hendrix Genetics for this project.” AI Labs (Utrecht University) #uuscience #research #AI #animalwelfare

Deze week namen we vanuit het 3AI-programma van het UMC Utrecht actief deel aan de ICT&health Conference, zowel als deelnemer als spreker. Mijn collega Carl Moons gaf een sessie over 'Trustworthy and Responsible AI in Healthcare'.
