Daarom besloot een groep rechtenstudenten te onderzoeken hoe ze via het internationaal recht actie kunnen afdwingen tegen klimaatverandering ⛈️. Bij het Internationaal Gerechtshof is de klimaatzaak deze week van start gegaan, waarbij 98 landen en 12 organisaties het woord zullen voeren. Onze juridische experts reageren in de media. ‘Je kunt zeggen dat dit de grootste rechtszaak in de geschiedenis van de mensheid is’, zegt Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh. It really was a great pleasure to be in Amsterdam for the Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance annual conference. We had an excellent two days’ discussions on a range of topics connected to Europe’s ‘geopolitical awakening’, the interconnections between European security, values, narratives and the rule of law. I was happy to present my thoughts on the prospects of EU enlargement to Ukraine and the importance of EU adherence to the international rule of law. Thanks again to Giacomo Tagiuri for the excellent organisation and to Maria Weimer for suggesting to invite me. It was really lovely to meet and connect with so many colleagues doing such interesting work 🙏

One could clearly see that Europe woke up to very bad news on February 24, 2022. To the surprise of many (but not the Baltic countries and Poland), they were forced to seriously support Ukraine—not with 50,000 helmets, as Germany did in the first days of Russia's invasion, but with weapons. Ukrainians are immensely grateful for this support, but the situation on the frontlines remains dire, and Russia has never abandoned its initial aim: to occupy all of Ukraine. After three years of fighting and immense sacrifice by Ukrainians, many Europeans have developed 'war fatigue' and fail to see the urgency of continued military support. With Trump’s return to the White House and North Korean troops fighting on Russia’s side, Europe must get serious about its defense. I will discuss the future of European security, which should include a 'whole-society approach' to defense and the need to maintain future peace in Ukraine through the presence of European troops there.
