🌍 Human Rights Day – December 10 🌍 This year's theme: “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now” Today marks Human Rights Day, a celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted in 1948. This day reminds us of our shared responsibility to uphold dignity, freedom, and equality for all. Today, in 2024, this day is as relevant as ever, the challenges remain. 🚨 Forced Labor Regulation: Progress or Missed Opportunity for Migrant Workers? The European Union's newly adopted Forced Labor Regulation is a critical move toward banning products made with forced labor from the EU market. However, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀. According to the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM), the regulation’s framework 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Undocumented migrants, who are among the most vulnerable, often cannot report forced labor practices due to fears of deportation or employer retaliation. 📌 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? PICUM and other advocacy groups recommend: 1️⃣ 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 to ensure workers can come forward safely. 2️⃣ 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 in the investigation process. 3️⃣ Creating 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 for undocumented workers to protect their rights. While the regulation's goals have been widely welcomed, its success hinges on strong and thorough implementation.. 🌟 It’s #WorldChildrensDay: A Call for Businesses to Act Responsibly 🌟 Children’s Day is a reminder of the joy, potential, and rights of every child. But did you know the way businesses operate impacts children in profound ways? From 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 and 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 to 𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 and 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀, nearly 𝟭 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 worldwide are directly or indirectly affected by global business decisions. According to #UNICEF here are some startling realities: 𝟭𝟲𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 were subjected to child labor as of 2020, and the risk has increased post-COVID-19. Over 𝟴𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 lack adequate maternity protections. 𝟮 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 live in areas with air pollution levels above WHO standards. Often, these impacts on children are overlooked—even when businesses focus on responsible practices for adults. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Children’s rights are not just a social issue—they’re a 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲. Policies that exclude children’s perspectives—like setting pollution standards for adults but not accounting for children’s vulnerability—can have devastating, unintended consequences.
