“Interoperability is key to having different interfaces interact smoothly and deliver real insights and value to the research community. But poor and missing metadata or closed systems often prevent infrastructures from working together optimally. Even in 2025, we are all still often inputting data by hand over and over again.” https://lnkd.in/dHKhMjem We could not agree more. That is why our Publication Enterprise Tool is a central backbone that connects all your systems. We have connectors with a wide range of systems already working out of the box. It is all about system interoperability and high quality metadata. Want a demo? Reach out to Ivo Verbeek

Your technology partner in the transition to Open Access
Over ons
We untangle and integrate complex systems to leverage high-quality metadata for strategic decision-making. As a leading strategic technology services partner, we are highly experienced and have in-depth expertise in unraveling complexities, breaking silos, and merging systems to help you obtain business intelligence to align with and further develop your strategy. We offer fit-for-purpose services and software solutions and integrations that support the accelerating transition to Open Access (OA) for all stakeholders in the STM publishing industry. To be able to obtain and connect accurate information to make data-driven decisions, high-quality metadata and systems interoperability is crucial. We help you map various systems to identify overlaps and connections using high-quality metadata and Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) to seamlessly integrate internal and external systems, making sure you will be able to retrieve the data you need to streamline your workflows. Over the last 20+ years, we have developed and refined our own open source tools such as a Publication Tracker to support the workflows of publishers, institutions, consortia, and funders.

For STM, we created a tool that uses different query sets to tag content against the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In other words, a text classification tool. As yet a demonstrator, but also available as an API, so we can also easily integrate this tool into existing publishing workflows. Ask me if you are interested.
Your feedback needed! Introducing the SDG Classifier Demonstrator, designed to support social responsibility by helping you align content with the UN SDGs. It’s a consistent, transparent framework for categorising content based on SDG targets, making it more discoverable and impactful. The SDG Classifier uses a pre-configured algorithm to evaluate content against specific SDG targets, then returns the number and name of all SDGs that the text matches. But it’s not done yet: we need your help testing it. You can try it out here & lend any feedback as well by 30 March >> https://lnkd.in/e-XKWeRN

The Publication Tracker Enterprise architecture operates on events to enable communication between loosely connected services, systems, and workflows, with an event signaling a change in state or an update, such as the acceptance or publication of an article. The metadata store also captures changes, which again are a valueable source of information. You can track for example changes in the author list between the acceptance and publication event. The Publication Tracker Enterprise links publishing workflows to fulfill the need for systems interoperability and high-quality metadata. This tool is based on an event-driven architecture in which inbound connectors prompt events, or events trigger outbound connectors based on pre-defined business rules. An event-driven approach allows for the orchestration of an array of services and workflows beyond basic communication, ensuring a more comprehensive and efficient system. As Phill Jones details in his post on the Scholarly Kitchen, https://lnkd.in/eqU4Xjbv, there are enough detection tools out there, but no guidelines yet on how to effectively manage the output generated by these tools. Ultimately, publishers are going to need to integrate tools into their existing workflows, which in practical terms means integrating into submission and editorial systems. It is all about integrated tech! Otherwise all of these tools will be useless. While it remains uncertain how publishers will address workflow challenges stemming from breaches of research integrity, it is clear that high-quality metadata must serve as the foundation of trustworthy publishing practices. Poor or lacking metadata are critical signifiers in any research integrity tool. None of these tools will work well if your metadata is not robust. Contact us to learn more about how we can help you sort your systems and workflows.

Last week, Ivo Verbeek and Yuri Vorontsov attended the STM Innovation & Integrity days in London. We were thrilled to speak with many forward-thinking publishers and other innovators. Two topics dominated our conversations: 1 - Integrated tech 2 - High-quality (meta)data

Yesterday was a good day at the STM innovation day with Ivo Verbeek doing our lightning talk, and lots of interesting discussions with publishers especially about innovations like LLMs, vectors and how to fit that into their existing workflows. Today the research integrity day focusing on the STM Integrity Hub, a project we are super proud of of course. Also with Yuri Vorontsov.

Vectors are a powerful tool to convert text into numerical representations, unlocking the potential of mathematical techniques to quickly and efficiently search, analyze and compare text. Within STM publishing, vectors can be utilized for: - Text similarity processes (for instance, identifying duplicates) - Matching affiliation texts to PIDs (for instance, our ROR matching service) - And much more! Appetence is one of the innovators at the STM Innovation Fair 2024. We will showcase several use cases for vector embeddings. Meet us there!

Large Language Models (LLMs) excel in tasks such as text extraction and classification. For example, they can effectively identify institutions or funders from an article’s acknowledgment section, or extract references. LLMs can also automatically generate keywords, summaries, and more. Appetence is one of the innovators at the STM Innovation Fair 2024. We will showcase several use cases for an LLM. Meet us there!
