🥭 Learn more about our 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 (𝐄𝐀𝐌𝐀) project! ATNi, in partnership with local stakeholders, is launching the Tanzania Market Assessment (component of the EAMA project) to drive healthier, more sustainable diets by engaging the private sector in Tanzania. This includes: • A food environment mapping and value chain analyses of fortified packaged foods. • An assessment of the healthiness of processed packaged foods sold on the market in Tanzania, with a focus on micronutrient fortification for up to 30 food and beverage (F&B) companies. •An assessment of up to 10 of the largest F&B companies nutrition commitments, performance and disclosures. The results of this assessment aim to be used by government, private sector, investors, consumer associations, academia among others to drive forward improved nutrition outcomes in Tanzania. 🌍 As part of the research approach, ATNi's Bo-jane W. and Mark Wijne shared an insightful week discussing the project methodology with a diverse group of government, civil society, local NGO and other stakeholders in Dodoma & Dar es Salaam. Thank you to all the participants who shared their ideas and perspectives, and for the support of the Tanzanian Ministry of Agriculture. 👉 For more information: https://lnkd.in/eq8FnTzj #Nutrition #Tanzania #PublicHealth #ProcessedFood

Two weeks ago I had the privilege to visit the Financial Times studio and present ATNi (Access to Nutrition initiative)'s latest Global Access to Nutrition Index. There are positive market trends towards healthier food environments. But it is far too slow. Lawrence Haddad CMG from Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) summarized this nicely: “Once again this ATNI global report provides the most authoritative assessment of the nutrition performance of the large food and drink companies. The good news is that the companies as a group are improving in terms of their healthy food offerings. The bad news is that progress is slow and from a low base. At the current pace the companies will only get to a 50% of their products being healthy by 2036. Given that diet is the main global risk factor for morbidity and premature mortality, companies have to do better, as do governments who need to put incentives and regulations in place to speed up this transition to better health for all.” Thanks to my fellow panelist for an important discussion: Rachel Crossley, Head of Stewardship, Europe, BNP Paribas Asset Management John Schoonbee, Global Chief Medical Officer, Swiss Re Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli, President/CEO, The ONE Campaign Simon Mundy, Moral Money Editor, Financial Times. Tackling malnutrition is not just a health issue - it is a global priority with major socio-economic implications. Malnutrition, from poor childhood growth to nutrient deficiencies and obesity, leads to higher mortality rates, preventable disabilities, and impaired cognitive development. Despite progress, global crises and climate change are exacerbating these issues. Yet, the power of evidence-based policies and investments to improve nutrition is undeniable, with every $1 invested yielding an average return of $23. Ahead of the 2025 Paris Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit, the Independent Expert Panel on Nutrition, convened by the Paris Peace Forum and led by Shawn Baker of Helen Keller Intl., is releasing targeted recommendations to amplify actions across sectors, including: 👨⚕️ Expanding and training health workforces for integrated nutrition services 🌾 Promoting climate smart agriculture 🍽 Addressing consumer barriers to healthy eating patterns 🏫Transforming existing school based feeding programs into true school nutrition programs - prioritizing communities living in food insecurity This is a call to action for governments, civil society, and private sector leaders. The #N4GParis Summit will be a pivotal moment to catalyze the political and financial will needed to tackle malnutrition head-on.
