🔎 Significant levels of hazardous flame retardant chemicals have been detected in children’s plastic toys sold in the EU 🥼 Scientists from the AURORA project co-authored a study published in Environmental Sciences Europe analyzing plastic toys from the French market for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PDBEs). Many of the analyzed toys were found to exceed EU safety limits. ⬇️ Listen to co-author Petra Pribylova from Masaryk University share her insights on the study and what it found ➡️ Read the full study: https://lnkd.in/dxbC74CQ ➡️ Or our summary news article: https://lnkd.in/dX5tRnss

Researching early life health impacts of micro- and nanoplastics
Over ons
The scale of micro- and nanoplastic pollution is becoming increasingly clear, but little is known about how this pollution impacts health. More research is needed, so the EU Horizon 2020 program funded five research projects on the impacts of micro- and nanoplastic on human health. AURORA is one of these projects, and it focuses specifically on understanding the early-life health impacts from exposures to micro- and nanoplastic. The team of international researchers within AURORA is spread across 11 partner organizations based in 9 different countries. Starting in May 2021 and running for five years, the project is developing an actionable European roadmap for early-life health risk assessment of micro- and nanoplastics to support better regulation and develop safer alternatives. ❓ What is the current state of methods available to detect and measure micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) in human tissue? 🥼 This is the question our scientists answer in their new review study published in Annual Reviews of Pharmacology and Toxicology. Led by Kuanliang Shao from Emory University, the study sees a need for further standardization and development of more scalable methods for population-wide biomonitoring. ➡️ Read the full study: https://lnkd.in/dwP_SjzR ➡️ Or our summary news article: https://lnkd.in/dYnJPS79

🌍 Microplastics and nanoplastics are everywhere including in our bodies, but we still do not understand how they might impact human health. 👨🏻🔬👩🏽🔬🧑🏼🔬 The AURORA project is investigating micro- and nanoplastic exposures and their potential effects during pregnancy and early life. 📚 Learn more about where we are with the research, the questions we are trying to answer, and our next steps in: ➡ Our newly published project protocol in JMIR Research Protocols ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eEgVhvuV ➡ The summary article in our news ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eS8mQFA8 ➡ An interview with the project coordinator Roel Vermeulen ⬇️

📢 New research is out on micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) from the AURORA project 👩🔬 Led by Jeske van Boxel from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), the peer-reviewed study in the journal Toxicology In Vitro looks into potential interactions of polystyrene (PS) MNPs with hormone receptors. Here are the key findings 👇 ➡️ PS-MNP uptake varies across cell types with smaller particles more readily internalized by cells involved in hormone production ➡️ No significant effects were found on estrogen and androgen receptor activity in vitro ➡️ In hormone-producing cells, PS-MNPs caused a reduction in estriol, a hormone important in pregnancies, and triggered an oxidative stress response Further studies are needed to fully understand any potential long-term implications of MNP exposure on human health. 📄 Check out the full study ➡️ https://lnkd.in/d8eQayPe 📰 Or our summary article ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dkcfd2fW

📢 New research is out from our scientists: A roadmap towards risk assessment of microplastics and nanoplastics on early-life health 📚 The proposed roadmap leverages established risk assessment approaches for chemicals, particles, and mixtures 💡 Significant knowledge gaps and complexities related to the distinct properties of micro- and nanoplastics still exist, and we outline which are critical to address. 👩🔬🧑🔬 Cross-disciplinary engagement is required to generate the evidence base necessary for understanding and mitigating risks during early-life from micro- and nanoplastics. Lead author Emily Christopher discusses what this new publication means for the field, next steps, and her own personal journey in public health research. 🆕 Three recent peer-reviewed research articles review (and to an extent reframe) our understanding of human exposures and effects from #microplastics and #nanoplastics. This includes a significant newly developed analysis technique from Columbia University and published in PNAS that found up to 240,000 plastic fragments per liter present in bottled drinking water💧 90% of these were nanoplastics, and the measured levels exceed previous estimates by at least a factor of 10.
