As organoid technologies advance, become more diverse, and increase in biosimilarity to human organs, the ethical landscape becomes more and more challenging to navigate for technology developers and policymakers alike. In his talk at the BIRDIE innovation workshop on March 12, Dr. Maxence Gaillard will discuss how to approach the complex question of bioethics in the age of microphysiolical systems. Maxence Gaillard is a philosopher of science and bioethicist with interests in neuroscience and biotechnology, including stem cells and microphysiological systems. As a researcher at UCLouvain and the University of Oslo and a member of the H2020 SwafS bioethics project HYBRIDA, he has conducted ethical assessments of tumoroids, embryo models, and other stem cell derived technologies. 🔗 Want to learn more about the event? Developing 3D human renal in vitro tubulointerstitium (TI) models for virology and nephrotoxicity applications
Over ons
BIRDIE - Bioprinting on-chip microphysiological models of humanized kidney tubulointerstitium. An EU funded research consortium developing three-dimensional (3D) in vitro human renal tubulointerstitium (TI) models with an unprecedented degree of mimicry and function towards native kidney. The primary focus of the project is the investigation of viral infection and nephrotoxicity applications, and to make the model applicable also to other kidney-related diseases. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 FET Open programme under grant agreement No 964452

How can in vitro kidney models make way for new ways to treat kidney diseases? This is one of the many important questions addressed at the BIRDIE workshop on March 12. For the workshop, we are delighted to be joined by Dr. Jitske Jansen who will provide an industry perspective on this topic and present the work performed at Sequantrix, developing new anti-fibrotic drugs targeting kidney, heart, and bone marrow fibrosis. Dr. Jitske Jansen is the Group Leader Target Validation at Sequantrix GmbH. She is the awardee of the TOPX Female2Follow Rising Star in Science Award 2022. Jitske has been instrumental in developing complex organoid model systems and has been a Group Leader for Translational Kidney Research at the Institute of Experimental Medicine and Systems Biology at Uniklinik RWTH Aachen. 🎉 Huge congratulations on your achievement from the entire BIRDIE consortium! 🎉 🚀 We thank you for your valuable contributions to the project and for being part of our journey to create tomorrow's solution for kidney disease research.
On December 10th, I defended my PhD dissertation titled: “Versatile multicomponent (bio)ink for advanced biofabrication”. The research work was carried out under a cotutelle agreement between Università di Trento (Biotech - Center for Biomedical Technologies) and Maastricht University (MERLN Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine). I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisors for their guidance during this journey: Dr Carlos Miguel Domingues Mota, Prof Devid Maniglio, Prof. Lorenzo Moroni and Prof. Antonella Motta. I am grateful to the assessment committee for taking the time to evaluate my thesis and for the nice and lively discussion. Last but not least, I am incredibly grateful to my friends and family that celebrated this achievement with me and made me feel loved and supported throughout the PhD. A special thanks to my paranymphs, Maria Kalogeropoulou and Vivek Cherian David for standing by my side. Hora est! 😊
