Last week, I had the pleasure of joining the BDCG NETWORK Inclusive Market Systems Symposium where thought leaders, policymakers, private sector players and other key stakeholders came together to explore the critical role of market systems in fostering resilient and inclusive economies and share insights, best practices and innovations for vibrant and resilient market systems. I was curious to unpack how we can leverage market systems development to unlock markets sustainably and inclusively for those at the base of the economic pyramid. All too often, people living in poverty are excluded or disadvantaged by the way markets operate. MSD is a coherent approach to understanding and intervening in markets so that they perform more beneficially and sustainably for those at the BoP. My takeaways i) Systemic Thinking Interventions should always think about scale. The initial interventions are a starting point leading to larger impact. By focusing on broader systems that shape market behaviour, practitioners are able to address root causes of market dysfunctions and drive long-lasting inclusive change. ii) Facilitation Empower local industry. Think beyond providing inputs. Interventions should be careful not to kill small industry by offering free inputs. This approach requires striking a balance between addressing market gaps and allowing local actors to drive and sustain change. Adopt a facilitative role, not a direct delivery model iii) Sustainability Think about change that lasts. Think about exit at project design. Design impact that is adaptive and resilient to shocks (agility). Empower local actors to sustain outcomes. Align with local incentives. This together with sharing practical cases and best practices made the symposium all worth it.
