At Buitengewone Varkens, we believe in meat with a story. We are here for everyone seeking truly good meat, with respect for animals, nature, and the food chain. Our pigs play an active role in nature management and are raised in an environment that guarantees the highest level of animal welfare.
Our Approach
Owners Cas den Boer and Josse Haarhuis, together with a dedicated team, have established a transparent and sustainable approach. Across 25 locations throughout the Netherlands, we collaborate with feed producer Nijsen to ensure our pigs are fed 100% circularly. This means our outdoor pigs forage for much of their own food, supplemented by rescued products from the human food chain. No extra farmland needed, and significantly less food waste.
Animal Welfare
Our pigs are born on small-scale farms with 35 times more space than organic pigs. The sows build their own nests and display fully natural behavior. The result? Breeds like Berkshire, Bonte Bentheimer, and Duroc, which grow slowly and produce beautifully marbled meat. Animal welfare is central, even though we don't carry an organic label due to the feed we use.
Fair Pricing
Good meat comes at a price, as we account for animal welfare and climate impact. However, we keep our prices affordable by selling directly to the hospitality industry and consumers, without using distribution centers or supermarkets.
