This November, together with Groeifiets, we launched the second round of our START programme at Partou kinderopvang Nederlandhof and de kleine wereld in Almere! START engages toddlers and their parents to build a cycling culture early. Over the course of six months, children are stimulated to practise cycling during playtime, while parents are empowered to support them as role models for sustainable mobility. We are an Amsterdam-based global NGO supporting community-led urban change through cycling.
Over ons
We are an Amsterdam-based global NGO guided by the belief that bicycles transform cities and cities transform the world. We envision an urban future in which half of city trips are by bicycle by the end of the decade. To help achieve this, we facilitate the development of bicycle cultures in cities across the world, striving towards this bold vision that we call 50x30.

On World Children’s Day, we commit to prioritising children’s well-being and creating cities where they feel safe, valued, and free to explore. 🚲💛 From parents and teachers to leaders and activists, each of us plays a role in shaping a world where children's rights aren't just recognised but truly realised. When we design streets for children, we build communities that reflect their needs, dreams, and potential - because when cities work for children, they work for everyone. Sign the Children’s Cycling Manifesto today and join the movement for child-friendly cities. https://lnkd.in/eTt4iQ8r #WorldChildrensDay

The Future of Mobility is already here! Earlier this month, Barcelona hosted Tomorrow.Mobility as part of the Smart Cities Expo World Forum, and our colleague Simon Alvarez Belon was there to connect with fellow urbanites. 🤝 On the conference ground, we connected with new faces but also ran into some close partners like Nudgd. Here are some of our highlights: ✅ Re-connecting with Nudgd, a year after we met at Tomorrow Mobility, this time as project partners working on our Totes en Bici initiative together. ✅ Learning from the speakers' learnings at the "Fail Forward - Innovations from Urban Mobility Innovations" session. A big thank you to Tomorrow.Mobility for helping us be there, we're looking forward to being back next year (maybe even on stage!). Save the date for next year's edition happening November 4th-6th. 🗓

Updates from Amsterdam! 🇳🇱 Two weeks ago, we officially kicked off the "Heel de School Fietst" (The Whole School Cycles) project at Yuverta secondary school in Amsterdam West, one of our implementation partners. This initiative encourages students to cycle more frequently, not just during school hours for gym classes and trips, but also for their daily commute. By providing bikes at the group level, we aim to challenge norms and make cycling a natural part of students' routines. Thanks to the City of Amsterdam, refurbished bikes from the city’s bike depot are being made available to the students for free. During the kick-off, students learned how to borrow the bikes, and a bike mechanic hosted a hands-on workshop on bicycle repairs. It was inspiring to see so many motivated students working hard to fix their own bikes! 💪🚲 #ActiveMobility #YouthCycling #Amsterdam #Heeldeschoolfietst

We’re excited to share that BYCS is partnering with Stichting Life Goals Nederland to launch "Start Cycling Together", a pilot cycle and life skills programme for children and youth with refugee backgrounds (ages 8-16) who recently arrived in the Netherlands after experiencing humanitarian crises. Over the course of a 12-week programme, participants will learn to cycle and develop vital socio-emotional skills to support their inclusion into new communities, address trauma, and improve both their mental and physical well-being. The programme, co-developed with our partner SportUtrecht, will be implemented at four selected locations across the Netherlands and will run through to early 2026. We are proud to have this project co-funded by the European Union. This initiative aligns with our vision to create more inclusive, resilient, and healthy communities. Stay tuned for updates on our progress and impact! #ActiveMobility #YouthEmpowerment

Cycling and physical activity share a common goal: getting people moving. 🤝 Our colleague Alex Baum attended ISPAH - The International Society for Physical Activity and Health where he had the opportunity to connect with global leaders shaping the future of physical activity and well-being. Here are our top takeaways: 🔹 Cycling can benefit from the physical activity sector by strengthening the evidence base for more cycling and developing improved measurement tools to track its growth and impact. 🔹 Encouraging cycling is a behaviour shift, and we must provide people with the awareness, skills, access, and motivation to make it happen. 🔹 For cycling and physical activity to truly benefit individuals and communities, they must become part of the daily routine—cycling to school, work, shops, and friends—not an add-on. A big thank you to our Cycle for Better Health partner, Cities for Better Health, for introducing us to this incredible ecosystem! We're working together to bridge the gap between health and mobility, highlighting cycling's crucial role in promoting physical activity, well-being, and its numerous health benefits. Global Experts Explore Cairo's Cycling Potential at #WUF12 As part of the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt, BYCS in collaboration with UN-Habitat Egypt and with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt organized a very interesting “Urban Walking Tour” in downtown Cairo. Approximately 50 international mobility experts joined us to explore potential bike-sharing locations and discuss the challenges and opportunities of urban cycling in Cairo. A dynamic networking event at the Netherlands' Embassy followed the tour, providing an opportunity for participants to further explore the topics and exchange expertise. 💡Did you know? The Netherlands is renowned for its cycling culture, with more bicycles than people! 🚴♀️🚴♂️ #UrbanCycling #SustainableMobility #NLinEgypt Eva Witteman Donia Tawakol Nelly Darrag Lon Zomer Sally Barsoum Folkert de Jager
