Did you know.... 🧐68% of all trash ends up in landfills. (Yes, yours, too.) Landfills emit vast amounts of methane, currently around 1.6 gigatons of CO₂ equivalents per year. That’s because methane is 72 times more potent than CO₂ over 20 years. For context, that emission is more than the entire aviation and shipping industries combined. 🤝Which is why we’re excited to introduce Joren Tangelder and Anthonie Jacobson, co-founders of Hydryx, a smart landfill management solution that we are funding. 🔥Hydryx' innovative solution addresses the inefficiencies of current landfill gas extraction systems– which currently allow more than half (!) of the methane produced in a landfill to escape into the atmosphere. 👷🏼Here’s what they’re building: A game-changing combination of hardware and AI-driven software that optimizes methane capture leading to an increase in green energy production. Offered through an affordable subscription based model, Hydryx makes it very enticing for landfill operators to jump on board and transform any landfill into a (higher) revenue-generating asset. 🏁Their 2030 aim? To remove 10MT of CO₂e. (For context: current emissions from landfills in Europe are 82 megatons of CO₂ equivalents yearly.) 🏄🏼♂️Sounds far fetched? We don't think so. They are on a Dutch test site already to demonstrate proof-of-concept, gearing up for deployment on other sites. ✨We believe Hydryx has massive global potential. The team, its strong commercial potential and roadmap milestones position them well for significant follow-on investments. 💸 (Which reminds us to mention to bigger funds out there: we are at your disposal to support when considering placing potential follow-on funding.) 🙌 Want to learn more about the Hydryx team? Please say hi to André Sobolewski and Silko Barth, founders of the latest venture we fund! ♻️Imagine turning "mine tailings" (a fancy word for the mining industry’s waste) into climate solutions. 🌎Blue Skies Minerals GmbH does just that. Drawing on experience in mining, they developed an innovative carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology to solidify and safely store CO₂ underground. 🙏Yes, that’s carbon storage AND solving environmental mining liabilities into one smart, sustainable package. ⚖️They aims at removing 150 k tons in 2027. By 2030, they will have 4 additional plants, removing between 1.5 and 1.8 MTons CO2 per year, which would be the equivalent CO2 capture of 81.8 million trees, or the annual emission of approximately 391,300 cars. 💸With Carbonfix funding, Blue Skies Minerals will complete its prototype, demonstrate it in the field and hire more talent. At Carbonfix, we believe Blue Skies Minerals exemplifies smart industrial integration and multi-benefit CO₂ removal—where environmental stewardship, innovative carbon sequestration, and real-world impact converge. ✨We are super excited to see where you can bring this and we have high hopes for you, André and Silko! ❗️Curious to learn more about the advice they would give to other Carbonfixers out there and the broader climate venture industry? 🏺It’s not often you get to introduce a mythological figure on LinkedIn. But... please welcome PRONOE in our midst! Greek for “forethought”, Pronoe is also the name of a French venture that Carbonfix is proud to support. ♻️Pronoe develops automated water treatment systems that can easily be integrated downstream from industrial sites along the coast. Return flows to sea are processed into less acidic or more alkaline flows, thereby locally mitigating the acidification of surface waters and restoring their natural capacity to remove CO2 from the air. 🏄🏼♂️Designed for frugality, sustainability, and deployability, Pronoe’s process does not produce wastes but can produce by-products on demand– and operates within pre-existing environmental permits for discharge. Now that's what we call efficient engineering. 🌏 The team, based in Paris, aims at installing 500kt removal capacity in 2030 and has a long-term aim of removing 700 Megatons per year. 🧑🏼🔬Using Carbonfix funds, Pronoe will be able to extend its runway, carry out tests and engineer their industrial demonstrator. 🏭For us at Carbonfix, Pronoe’s nascent technology is a great example of industrial integration and co-benefit maximization, where CO2 removal activities lead not only to high-quality CO2 removal certificates but also to environmental co-benefits and clear implications for industrial decarbonation and insetting activities. Go check them out at https://www.pronoe.earth/ Or read a Q&A in our newsletter (link below) Rock on, Nicolas Sdez & Juan Buceta! 🛳️🍾 Global shipping accounts for at least 3% of global emissions. Solutions are desperately needed. Which is why we're thrilled to announce a new venture Carbonfix is supporting: ACT (Artificial Controlled Technology), a company developing AI-driven solutions for the huge emission problem of the marine industry. 🌊With their flagship Large Quantified Language Model (LQLM) they aim to deliver up to 5% emissions reductions in the short term, scaling to 35-40% of emissions reductions in the long term. 📜Their LQLM goes beyond traditional AI tools by quantifying real-world impacts. By analyzing live and historical data—from vessel performance to environmental conditions—it empowers operators to optimize fleet efficiency without installing invasive hardware. 🧑🏻🏫From routing to energy demand to human behavior: the federated learning system ensures that insights are securely shared across fleets, delivering smarter operations without compromising data privacy. This approach makes every specific learning from one ship, instantly adaptable to others in the fleet. Now that's smart. 🏄🏼♂️And the best part? They're poised to get on their first vessel *next month*, the Duesto from Onego Shipping & Chartering BV. Congrats on achieving this important milestone Dirk Neugebauer and Han van Blanken, you're an inspiration for all of us at Carbonfix and we'll be rooting for your succes! 🪵Sometimes you have to go to the past, to go far into the future. We're excited to support Underground Forest, founded by Kees de Gruiter with a loan to further develop a carbon storing wood piling technology that has been known for millennia and stores carbon for –at least – hundreds of years. 📜The best part: the technique is low tech and left its beta phase thousands of years ago. 👷🏽♀️The loan provided by Carbonfix will be used to finance the first kiloton removal, validate the piling process on farmland and build Underground Forest's support from both commercial and governmental funded entities. ↻Wood piling stores natural carbon in the ground for a thousand plus years. And there are multiple "dual usage" business cases to validate such as dyke reinforcement, peatland restoration and of course laying foundations for construction. We really see this pathway as a potential multi-megaton solution within the CDR category. 🍾With Underground Forest's nature based solution (biomass burial), Carbonfix funds yet another type of technology on the scale of carbon removal technologies. From DAC enablers (Skyrenu Technologies/ Stathmos-Balance the Climate enhanced rock weathering (Sahara Blue Carbon, Vesta, PBC), Direct Ocean Capturing (SeaO2, and another DOC project t.b.a) all the way up to temperature regulation (Arctic Reflections) : we aim to support all types of moonshots that avoid, capture or remove greenhouse gasses. Best of luck, Kees, and let’s go deeper underground! Siemon van den Berg Pepijn van Dijk Arnoud Haverlag Olga Liash, Jarno van den Heuvel Sidney John Vollmer info + links in comment.

With equal amounts pleasure and pride, we can announce that SeaO2 has raised over €2.000.000,- to remove 1 gigaton of CO₂ from the seas by 2045. (Video on their amazing process in the comment) This round of funding will power their transition from prototype to pilot plant, launching in 2025 with an annual capacity of 250 tons of CO₂. We provided SeaO2 with part of the funds, and helped shape a coalition of brave investors. Which is why we want to also express our sincere appreciation to The DOEN Foundation, NEW-TTT fonds (NV NOM), Future Tech Ventures and the informal investors Eduard Talman and Siddharth Kambe in supporting a crucial moonshot venture like Sea02. Thank you all for your trust and commitment! Siemon van den Berg Pepijn van Dijk Arnoud Haverlag Jeroen Hazewinkel Olga Liash Jarno van den Heuvel Sidney John Vollmer

"More and more entrepreneurs are quietly directing a portion of their earnings toward the greater good. They don’t always talk about it—they just want to make a difference,” says Olga Liash, board member at CarbonFix. She calls it ‘capitalantropy’ and explains why this is good news for sustainable start-ups with ideas that some might deem ‘too crazy to work’: https://buff.ly/4fmtrGy.

Look: at the Climate Change Summit 2024 in Bucharest, Tom Meijeraan of Arctic Reflections shared a powerful reminder of the urgency we face: by 2030, Arctic summers could be ice-free. With destructive effects on biodiversity, sea levels, and our climate in general. A big thank you to Tom, for again highlighting the critical reality of potential ice-free Arctic summers. #ClimateChangeSummit #ArcticReflections #CarbonFix https://lnkd.in/eRjRn_up
🧊 Ice-free summers in our lifetime? I explained at #ClimateChangeSummit! At the Climate Change Summit ‘24, I was invited to highlight the alarming decline of Arctic sea ice and the scary reality we may face: ice-free summers as soon as 2030. Why does this matter? Arctic sea ice regulates global temperatures, influences ocean currents, and supports critical ecosystems. 🌊🌍 Without urgent action, we risk devastating consequences for biodiversity, sea levels, and our climate. This is why I started Arctic Reflections together with the brilliant Fonger Ypma, to extend our timeframe and reverse the trends through innovation and collaboration. Watch this 1-minute clip to understand why Arctic Reflections is committed to protecting this fragile region, for today and for future generations. 🌎💙 #ClimateChangeSummit #ArcticReflections #SeaIceDecline #ClimateAction #IceFreeSummers #ArcticPreservation #GlobalWarming #ProtectTheArctic #SustainableFuture
