🌱 'Such a promising sector!' Last week, a Ugandan Nilotica Shea delegation showcased their innovative product at BIOFACH 2025. 🌍 CBI Director Judith Arends attended the event and spoke about how Shea Nilotica supports sustainable development in Northern Uganda, particularly for women working in the industry. The Ugandan Nilotica Sector Committee shared some fascinating insights. Members Marion Etiang-Busingye EMBa. BSc. (MOHCA Beauty & Skincare), Dr Francis Omujal (National Chemotherapeutical Research Institute), Margaret Laloyo (Blessed Organic Release) and Chariton Namuwoza (NOGAMU) presented these key points: ✅ Over 16 million women worldwide are active in the shea sector, with women managing 90% of Uganda's shea business ✅ Nilotica shea is valued for its healing properties and high absorption ability ✅ Producers cold-press Nilotica shea because it melts at low temperatures, which helps preserve all its natural properties 🤝 The shea representatives also met with several cosmetics companies and service providers to learn about the European market, including Dirkzwager Moordrecht B.V., C. Steinweg Group, TLR International Laboratories, PETKUS Group, FairWild Foundation, NATRUE - The International Natural and Organic Cosmetics Association, Rapunzel Naturkost ,Tradin Organic We appreciate everyone who joined us at BIOFACH, both in person and online. 📬 Want to learn more? CBI - Centre for the Promotion of Imports from developing countries
Non-profitorganisaties
Sustainable production and trade | Export to Europe | Import from a developing country | Collaborate
Over ons
CBI (Centre for the Promotion of Imports from developing countries) is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and is part of the Development Co-operation effort of the Netherlands. We have been operating within this policy framework since 1971. Our mission is to support the transition towards inclusive and sustainable economies. We strengthen the social, economic and environmental sustainability of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries. We do this by connecting SMEs to European and regional markets. In doing so, we promote and create decent jobs, and we stimulate sustainable production and trade. In our work, we use a systems approach; we recognise that unsustainable practices are often the result of complex systems. By supporting sustainability transitions, we aim to address the primary causes of problems in existing systems. Addressing these problems requires collaboration with partners. That is why we develop and carry out projects in close cooperation with local and international stakeholders, partner organisations and other Dutch government-funded programmes. We also work more and more often with local experts.

🫚 Nigerian ginger is becoming a popular agricultural export product, but challenges such as ginger blight and meeting European sustainability standards have limited its reach. CBI’s support programme is helping to overcome these barriers by connecting Nigerian suppliers with European importers and helping build sustainable trade relationships. Two success stories, Daraja and Gacon, show how support can turn problems into progress. They have set up test farms to fight crop disease and are using better farming methods that European buyers are interested in. Key highlights: ✅ Building strong partnerships: CBI is supporting Nigerian SMEs with training, export coaching, and market linkages to ensure they meet European quality standards and obtain necessary certifications. ✅ Focus on sustainability: CBI’s emphasis on ethical sourcing and traceability aligns with European importers' growing demand for transparency. ✅ Resilience and innovation: Nigerian producers are adopting more diverse farming practices to ensure long-term sustainability. ✅ This collaboration benefits both Nigerian producers and European importers by strengthening the global ginger supply chain.
