Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS) is dedicated to ground-breaking research that explores the multifaceted relationships between the arts and society. LUCAS hosts a range of academic disciplines clustered around a key research theme: the relationships between the arts and society. Our members study cultural production over the course of two millennia, from classical antiquity to our contemporary world. Strengthened by our diversity, LUCAS members are uniquely placed to study the broad concept of the arts, with its rapidly changing ideas, aesthetics, and theories of cultural production. Through research, expertise, and service, the Institute strives to facilitate a deeper understanding of the cognitive, historical, cultural, creative, and social aspects of human life.

Environmental humanities LU members Johannes Müller and Claire Weeda, together with #CML colleague Krijn Trimbos received the 100 year anniversary prize of the Gratama Foundation at the 450 year Dies natalis of Universiteit Leiden. The interdisciplinary research group consisting of historians, ecologists and memory scholars will collaborate on a project that studies environmental change and its human perception in the 19th-century Netherlands. The project combines methodologies from history, museum and collection studies and molecular ecology to make hidden ecological change visible and understandable.
