From Ghana to the Notary: CIWI Turns 1!!! Exactly one year ago, CIWI was officially born. From an idea that started in Ghana to sitting at the notary’s office on December 20, 2023, it’s been an incredible journey so far. Over the past year, we’ve achieved so much: ✅ Opened our office at YES!Delft ✅ Completed the NWO Take-off project with TU Delft ✅ Filed our first patent ✅ Installed our first pilot at Brabant Water ✅ Built strong partnerships and ✅ Secured funding from the Rabobank Impact Fund We’re so grateful for the support of our partners, team, and community who have believed in our mission to make water treatment more sustainable. Een Volle Zaal tijdens Onze Lunchlezing: CIWI bij De Haagse Hogeschool Afgelopen maand hadden we het genoegen om een lunchlezing te geven op De Haagse Hogeschool / The Hague University of Applied Sciences in Delft, georganiseerd in samenwerking met Rheon, de studievereniging. Voor een volle zaal van enthousiaste studenten #Elektrotechniek en #Mechatronica mochten we CIWI presenteren. Het was geweldig om te zien hoe betrokken deze toekomstige ingenieurs waren bij de uitdagingen en kansen in duurzame waterbehandeling. Tijdens de lezing deelden we onze missie: het revolutioneren van waterbehandeling door een duurzame productiemethode voor waterbehandelingschemicaliën te ontwikkelen. Daarnaast waren we er ook om nieuw talent aan te trekken. De energie en nieuwsgierigheid in de zaal waren enorm inspirerend. 🔧 CIWI’s Prototype Pilot: First Steps at Full Scale 🔧 Our first prototype at full scale is now up and running at the Zevenbergen plant! Though still a work-in-progress, it’s allowing us to see how our iron-based coagulant works in real water treatment. We’re currently producing our coagulant and using jar tests to adjust dosages, all aimed at achieving the best possible water quality. Curious to learn more? Around the world, many water treatment facilities remain unused because the materials needed to clean the water are either unavailable or too expensive. When Jasper Schakel learned about this issue, he decided to take action. Together with Erik Kraaijeveld, he developed an electrochemical process capable of purifying water, leading to the creation of CIWI. This process only requires electricity, offering a cheaper, more sustainable, and simpler alternative for wastewater treatment. In recent months, CIWI has closely collaborated with the Delft University of Technology on a #Takeoff1 project granted by the NWO (Dutch Research Council) 🚀. Additional research was conducted at the Waterlab to validate the business case for CIWI’s patented Electrochemical Metal Hydroxide technology. With the invaluable support of Julie Delonnelle and Dounia El hilali, two interns from France, we investigated both the (long-term) efficiency of the process and the dissolution limits of the steel electrodes🔬. These parameters are crucial to the proposed business case, influencing operational and construction costs💵 as well as the carbon footprint of CIWI’s technology🌱. The business case incorporates a financial perspective, considering both market price and “#trueprice,” including direct and indirect environmental costs.   While we are still in the process of gathering and analysing data, as well as assessing the business case and Life Cycle Assessment, preliminary results offer some interesting insights: ⚡Energy consumption was as low as predicted and remained stable over extended periods. 📈The efficiency of iron hydroxide production stayed above the desired levels. 🏆Electrodes were dissolved to levels significantly higher than expected, positively impacting the business case.   The outcomes of this research mark an important step toward implementing our technology, helping to define system boundaries and providing insights into best practices.
