CogniGron researcher Niels Taatgen at the conference THE Interdisciplinary Science Forum last month. He participated in the discussion on interdisciplinary leadership, "A new era of interdisciplinary leadership in science research", in which the participants also gave an introduction. He spoke on the various interdisciplinary collaborations he is active in (especially CogniGron, but also the AI programme and the Jantina Tammes School), what the challenges are (speaking each other's language, funding, perseverance to make it a real success), but also how great the outcomes can be. CogniGron was invited to speak at the Science Forum event about bridging disciplinary boundaries in academic science as a valuable example of a multidisciplinary centre. Neuromorphic computers – computers inspired by how the human brain works – offer a promising alternative. They enable fast and energy-efficient data processing while reducing dependence on external resources and expertise. CogniGron and the University of Groningen participated in the development of a new white paper, “Neuromorphic Computing in the Netherlands” that highlights significant domestic expertise in the field and advocates for the establishment of a national coalition to coordinate future efforts in alignment with other key technologies. Therefore, our CogniGron members meet on a regular basis and during yesterday’s roundtable discussion, led by Martin F. Sarott, attendees spoke about how they can bridge the gap between researchers at CogniGron and encourage more interaction and collaboration by establishing a common vocabulary. Creating a glossary – made by and for the CogniGron community – will help people from various disciplines understand each other better. Researchers will provide colloquial explanations for terms frequently used in their research fields but may not be common knowledge for others. The CogniGron Talent Network board has already laid important groundwork and will continue collecting entries in the future. #futureproofcomputing #neuromorphicomputing #interdisciplinaryresearch #Groningen

13 citations in 2,5 months! 📝 Congratulations to Fernando M. Quintana Velázquez, Lyes Khacef, Fernando Pérez Peña, Pedro L. Galindo, Emre Neftci and Elisabetta Chicca! The article ‘𝐄𝐓𝐋𝐏: 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞-𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞’ has already been mentioned in various research papers in only a few weeks, which demonstrates its importance and impact. CogniGron researcher Elisabetta Chicca is one of the authors. A few explaining words from the work's corresponding author, Fernando M. Quintana Velázquez (currently a postdoc in Erika Covi’s CogniGron team): "Current AI systems are capable of learning complex patterns from large amounts of data, but are unable to quickly adapt to new data in energy-constrained devices like wearables, smart cameras or autonomous robots. In this work, we take inspiration from the biological brain to model a new synaptic plasticity rule for online learning and adaptation. This learning rule, called Event-based Three-factor Local Plasticity (ETLP), is as the same suggests a local plasticity rule where the synaptic weight is modified on-the-fly based on the activities of the neurons it connects, and a teaching signal provided by the user or the environment. Therefore, ETLP can be implemented in low-latency and low-power neuromorphic hardware with co-localized memory and processing. Our results show comparable performance to the non-local backpropagation rule, with a much lower latency and computational complexity. This interdisciplinary research has the potential to enable real-time adaptation at the edge of the sensors for many emerging applications." Tamalika Banerjee on "Memristive devices based on complex oxides as synapses and neurons" in Seoul last week at the International Conference on Memristive Materials, Devices & Systems (MEMRISYS 2024). Her talk discussed two examples of nonlinear systems, akin to synapses and neurons, that they designed at interfaces with complex oxides done by CogniGron PhDs Anouk Goossens and Azminul Jaman. In the first part, they showed how areal downscaling of interface memristive devices integrated on a semiconducting oxide showed enhanced memristive properties, contrary to expectations. In the second work, done by Azminul Jaman, they demonstrated how electronic instabilities manifest as negative differential resistance (NDR) in manganite thin films that were exploited to demonstrate voltage control oscillators, with tunable frequencies, in a network array. This year’s edition of MEMRISYS was about the latest developments in memristor technologies. Read more on https://lnkd.in/ee5swHPm #futureproofcomputing #memristor #neuromorphic

Great meeting of the NL-ECO project of the Dutch National Research Agenda (NWA) on energy-efficient computing solutions, involving scientists, engineers, societal partners and artists. The photo was taken by Niels Taatgen, one of the partners, at the Atrium of the new Feringa building of the University of Groningen where WERC had installed one of their "digital organisms": the CHIRP interacting network.
We are NL-ECO! 🌍💡 Our incredible team, made up of academic experts 🔬, industrial partners 🏭, and societal organizations 🤝, gathered in University of Groningen for the bi-annual consortium meeting! Over the past two days, we enjoyed a dynamic and exciting mix of brain-inspired presentations, interactive sessions, a special visit to ASTRON and artistic and social moments. A big thank you to the local organizing team from CogniGron, University of Groningen (FSE) and to all our partners for their valuable contributions. #nwagenda #nwaNL_ECO #neuromorphic #Innovation

The CogniGron Talent Network (CTN) encourages young scientists to develop a multidisciplinary research perspective early on in their careers. Stimulating scientific exchange is key to CogniGron 🔑 A little while ago, we announced a CTN Board change, and this time we would like to get to know Martin F. Sarott, the newest board member, a little better. He is from Switzerland and works as a postdoctoral researcher in the Solid State Materials for Electronics Group led by Prof. Beatriz Noheda. In his research, he aims to mimic the non-volatile memory capacity of biological synapses and the volatile spiking behaviour of neurons using ferroelectric thin films. Great to have you on board, Martin! 🌍 Read more about Martin, his research and visions for the CTN ➡ https://lnkd.in/eS4NsZyM #researchers #talent #computing #neuromorphic #FutureProofComputing
