🎯 We have concluded a day filled with interesting discussions on #EUDataLaw, the #DigitalEconomy, and private and public #profiling. 🔸 Stefaan Van den Bogaert kicked-off the conference with a warm welcome and introduction, followed by an insightful keynote speech by Herke Kranenborg on the CJEU’s case law on profiling and automated decision-making. 🔹 Inge Graef addressed “Trade-offs in EU data law”, showing the need for a mix of approaches: top-down legally binding rules, bottom-up empowerment for consumers and businesses, and self-regulatory governance mechanisms for sharing private data. 🔸 Giovanni De Gregorio focused on the impact of online political advertising on fundamental rights and democracy. He discussed the new EU Regulation on Political Advertising and its relationship with other data protection instruments, while pointing out the ongoing enforcement challenges. 🔹 Anastasia ILIOPOULOU-PENOT delved into “Profiling, Recommender Systems and the DSA”, explaining how the Digital Services Act regulates social media recommender systems and highlighting the risks that these pose to the individual, society and democracy. 🔸 Nadezhda Purtova addressed “Why personal data fails as a trigger for legal protection against profiling and what to do about it”. She showcased the unclear boundaries of "personal data", zooming into the definition of “identification”. Moreover, she highlighted the (dis)alignment between the two processes of “how the law thinks and how the world actually works”. 🔹 Discussing “Buying and selling data”, Giorgio Monti examined how EU law shapes data markets, focusing on the importance of balancing data protection and privacy rights with creating a solid-driven economy. 🔸 Wolfgang Kerber explored the complex relationship between data protection and a thriving data economy. He showed how market failures impact effective governance, discussing examples within the GDPR, the Data Act and the Digital Markets Act, and highlighted the importance of aligning data law with competition and consumer policies. 🎤 We extend our gratitude to all speakers and participants for their valuable contributions! #LOLEC #EU #DataLaw #AI #profiling
