ARE YOU AWARE THERE'S STILL ONE FINAL COP HAPPENING NEXT WEEK? The UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) is not the only COP. This convention was sandwiched between other two global COPs: The UN Biodiversity Conference COP16, which took place in October, and the UNCCD COP16 on desertification and land degradation, happening next week. We think these three COPs should be better linked. Why? 🟢 Climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, water scarcity, desertification, and food insecurity, are all interconnected (!) You can’t effectively tackle one without addressing the others.🙅🏽♀️ 🟢 The solutions we need, MUST work across these systems—bringing cross-cutting benefits to nature, communities, and businesses. ⚒️ 🟢 A holistic, integrated approach is the only way forward. It’s not just about reducing carbon emissions but about creating a resilient, thriving future where ecosystems and societies flourish together. 🌅 So, here's what we propose: ❌ Let's stop viewing climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation as separate crises. ✅ Instead, let’s implement integrated, bottom-up solutions - like holistic landscape restoration - that are more cost-effective and create positive impact for all beings. Want to hear more? Watch our colleague Lily M. speak alongside Paul van Zyl, co-founder of The Conduit, and Tessa Vincent at Race to Zero on a recent Weber Shandwick panel about COP29 climate communications. #HolisticThinking #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #IntegratedSolutions #COP29 #NatureBasedSolutions

We are really excited about our recent collaboration with the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC), on the development of the 4 Returns Short Learning Program. We hope that this course will enable many more communities and practitioners to lead in holistic land management via the 4 Returns Framework in the years to come. A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated team at Southern Africa Wildlife College and our colleagues for their commitment to bringing this vision to life. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates coming your way soon...! If you are interested in exploring the 4 Returns Framework, find more information here https://lnkd.in/eedhn9fb
After a year of collaboration, it’s been incredible to see our efforts come to life. Elna de Beer from the Southern African Wildlife College has developed the 4 Returns Short Learning Program, based on our guidebook, to equip communities and practitioners with practical tools for holistic land management and a deeper understanding of systems thinking. The pilot course in the Makuleke community showed great promise for our future collaboration. Our visit there was definitely a highlight—we had insightful discussions with the Chief, Royal Council, and community members about landscape restoration. It was truly inspiring to see our guidebook in action, with the walls of the community center covered in notes from last week’s 4R SLP, reflecting the program’s impact. We also had some deeper sessions exploring the different types of returns, from social to financial. Sydney and Phillip, two key local leaders, left feeling energized, saying, “Now we know what we need to work on - time to implement!” The enthusiasm and commitment are clear, and we’re excited to keep building on this momentum. #Conservation #Collaboration #SAWC #4Returns #HolisticLandManagement Sboniso Phakathi Theresa Sowry Willemijn de Iongh Roos van der Deijl Grace Warner Gabrielle Taus Jim Mackintosh John Loudon

WHY NON-STATE ACTORS ARE CRITICAL TO ACHIEVING THE RIO CONVENTIONS! 🌎 Crowther Lab | ETH Zurich new report in support of the High-Level Climate Champions offers insights into how we can catalyse more contributions from #NSAs Their key finding? From community and NGOs regenerating landscapes in Nepal & Spain to businesses restoring coral reefs in Indonesia and forests in Brazil: where clear policies meet strong action from non-state actors (NSAs), we can create #AmbitionLoops to reach the climate and nature goals of the #RioConventions more effectively. The report highlights our work with AlVelAl in the Altiplano Estepario region of Spain as a case study, showcasing how non-state actors (NSAs) are driving ecosystem restoration there using the 4 Returns Framework. This pilot programme has fostered collaboration among farmers, conservationists, businesses, and researchers to promote regenerative agriculture and reforestation. This (ongoing) partnership in the south of Spain has resulted in improved biodiversity, soil health, and rural livelihoods, demonstrating how NSAs can catalyse large-scale, community-driven restoration projects that align with the Rio Conventions. 🗞️ Access the report here https://bit.ly/3CLS7dq #RacetoZero #RacetoResilience #COP29 #GenerationRestoration

🗣️ Another Year of Blah Blah Blah? Here’s What Nature Restoration Advocates Across the World Want to Hear at COP29 🤷♀️ As COP29 wraps up in Baku, the world is asking tough questions: Are these negotiations delivering what our planet needs? We asked our partners working locally on nature restoration what they want to hear at COP. Here is what they said: 👉 Value Local Knowledge & Diversity "Everyone living in a landscape has wisdom to share," says Ben Cole. Solutions crafted locally—by farmers, Indigenous communities, and rural leaders—are vital to the success of policy creation. 👉 Fund Long-Term Goals Bold plans need bold funding. Communities are ready to act, but resources are missing. “Good plans without funding won’t happen,” says Lucy Magembe. Let’s reframe nature investment as a commitment to our shared future. 👉 Break Down Silos “We cannot separate biodiversity from climate—or communities,” stresses Astrid Vargas. Leaders must prioritise integrated solutions that reflect the interconnected nature of these crises. In these last moments of COP29, what would you want to say to decision-makers?💭 🔗 Read the FULL blog here: https://lnkd.in/dDbFwXzB Elvira Marín Irigaray Esther Blom Debs Martin Manisha Motwani Sarat Gidda #COP29 #NatureRestoration #Biodiversity #LocalVoices #ClimateChange

🌍 How can we better prepare for disaster by listening to nature? Extreme weather events have become the backdrop of our global climate dialogue. From devastating wildfires in southern Europe and North America to catastrophic floods displacing millions in South Asia, 2024 has underscored the urgency of climate action. As global leaders gather at COP29 for nature and biodiversity day, there’s an opportunity to turn discussions into tangible action, using nature as a powerful ally in disaster preparedness. But how? Here are 3 ways nature can lessen the impact of disasters—and what agreements are needed at COP29 to make them a reality: 🌱 1. Invest in long-term funding for landscape restoration Degraded landscapes increase disaster risks and weaken resilience. Sustained, long-term funding is essential to restore ecosystems and build resilient communities. COP29’s focus on climate finance must prioritise nature restoration through public-private investment models. 🏞️ 2. Blend nature-based solutions with traditional infrastructure Green infrastructure—like reforestation and wetland restoration—enhances the resilience of traditional (grey) infrastructure, creating robust systems to combat floods, droughts, and extreme weather. There are examples around the world that are already portraying the success of this model, such as Peru’s Abancay Model Forest! 🌳 3. Move beyond carbon credits Financial systems must move beyond carbon credits to also value ecosystem services like biodiversity, water security, and soil health. COP29 must establish frameworks to support ecosystem restoration efforts. 🔗 Read the full article here to explore how COP29 can reshape global disaster preparedness through integrated, proactive, and nature-centred strategies. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/edtZnbFC 📸 Photo Credit: ©Nicolás Villaume, Andean Forests Programme #COP29 #nature #biodiversity #climatefinance #transition #policy

💸 $700 billion missing for climate & nature finance each year. BUT WHY? Because we’re still stuck valuing only financial returns while ignoring the true wealth of our planet: healthy ecosystems, thriving communities, and societal resilience. 💚 Here’s the bigger picture: ❌ Around $500 billion in subsidies are still funding industries that harm the planet. Imagine redirecting those funds to regenerative solutions that heal the Earth… 🌱 ✅ Valuing nature means redefining success: What if we measured progress by biodiversity, clean air, and flourishing communities, not just profit margins? 📈 To achieve our 2030 climate goals, we must embed nature into every decision: our systems, measurements, and narratives must prioritise the planet. This is more than a financial gap—it’s a mindset shift. It’s time to move away from harm, rethink our priorities, and invest in a future where ecology drives the economy. 🌏 Want to hear more?
