A lot of excitement at our demo on fault diagnosis at the Precisiebeurs in the Brabanthallen in Den Bosch this week! Together with TU/e High Tech Systems Center, the Control Systems Technology (CST) TU/e section, Mechanical Engineering at TU/e, demonstrated their latest results on fault diagnosis for precision motion control - an essential step towards enhancing precision, reliability, and efficiency in mechatronics! In real-time, advanced algorithms based on nullspaces showed to be capable to pinpoint system failures with unmatched accuracy. Such algorithms pave the way for predictive maintenance and self-healing machines based on controller reconfiguration. Nonlinear control takes over?!   🗣️The ever-increasing demands on precision and throughput in semiconductor manufacturing machines challenge today’s linear control designs. For that reason, the industry is starting to witness a shift from traditional linear control methods to more flexible, but also more complex nonlinear control strategies. At Control Systems Technology, we’re excited to be part of this transformation!   💡The November issue of the DSPE magazine Mikroniek devoted to "The future of precision engineering" features an article by our Assistant Professor Sebastiaan van den Eijnden and colleagues Luke van Eijk (ASMPT, TU Delft), S Hassan HosseinNia (TU Delft), and Marcel Heertjes (TU/e, ASML), discussing the use of nonlinear integrators in precision motion control.    🔍 This research collaboration between academia and industry has resulted in insightful nonlinear controllers that canovercome fundamental limitations in linear control, and boost the performance of high-precision motion systems such as wafer scanners and wire bonders.    🤝🏽 We’re thrilled to see research like this unlocking solutions that bring us closer to the next generation of ultra-precise, high-speed semiconductor manufacturing machines! 🚗💡 Experimental validation of Automated Lane Merging 👉🏽 Recently, our PhD candidate Merlijne Geurts tested model predictive control (MPC) solutions for lane merging in cars. Together with her team, she tested the solutions at the test-track with multi-brand cars at the Ford Proving Ground. The testing and development of these trajectory generation algorithms is part of the NWO AMADeuS-project. 🔍 The AMADeuS project (led by Maurice Heemels) tackles challenges in the field of Artificially Intelligent Multi-Vehicle Automated Driving Systems. Specifically, the challenge of safety certification is addressed by developing and testing safe motion planning algorithms. Self Learning Control: a breakthrough in efficient, low-emission automotive powertrains In partnership with DENSO Aachen, for his PhD research Prasoon Garg explored Self Learning Control methods for automotive powertrains, using Machine Learning to automate and optimize control calibration. As road transport is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, the automotive industry faces the critical challenge of developing cleaner, more efficient powertrain systems. Through innovative techniques like Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks and Reinforcement Learning, this work achieves faster, safer calibration processes, including real-world validation on a vehicle test bench. With its patented auto-calibration strategy, the researcher demonstrates the potential of SLC to enhance efficiency, reduce emissions, and cut development time—marking a significant step forward in AI-driven automotive innovation. Prasoon Garg defended his PhD thesis at the Department of Mechanical Engineering on November 6th. What was your motivation to work on this research project?
