What happens when your rival beats you to the finish line in emerging technology? Martijn Rasser explains why (1) quantum computing and (2) biotechnology are the two most dangerous areas of China’s technological advancement. Here’s WHY it’s such a critical issue to follow: - China’s approach to biotechnology crosses ethical boundaries. They’re willing to apply biotechnologies in ways the U.S. and its allies would never, opening the door to risks we can’t control. - With quantum computing, their progress could upend encryption systems—exposing sensitive data and undermining global security. Martijn knows these topics better than most, so I couldn’t wait to get his thoughts on these threats. His career spans over a decade at the CIA, where he analyzed technological innovation and weapons development, and now at Datenna, where he tracks China’s innovation strategies in real-time. ⚠️ His warning is clear: The first to reach the finish line gains an unmatched advantage—and China is playing to win. Listen to Martijn’s full breakdown of the risks and what they mean for the U.S. in this week’s Navigating Noise episode: navigatingnoisepodcast.com

Chinese chip companies are expressing optimism about adopting a localisation strategy to withstand the third iteration of US export controls, aimed at curbing China's semiconductor manufacturing. However, our Managing Director Martijn Rasser provided insights to Reuters, explaining that the new controls target the "weakest spot" of China's semiconductor industry, by eliminating the ability to depend on foreign equipment. 🔎 Europe rethinks trade strategies regarding Chinese companies, Financial Times reports. As Brussels tightens its trade policies, new rules may require Chinese firms to set up factories in Europe and share tech know-how in exchange for EU clean-tech subsidies. These measures aim to shield European industries from cheaper imports but echo China's own controversial trade tactics. With €1 billion in grants for battery innovation up for grabs, this shift could reshape global supply chains. Read more: https://lnkd.in/emzG3zZy 💡 Want to stay ahead of these developments? Major news outlets are reporting US President-elect Donald Trump has settled on his top picks for his foreign policy team, with China skeptics Mike Waltz and Marco Rubio. Marco Rubio has been an outspoken critic of the US export control scheme for allowing China access to critical technology. Last year, Rubio urged the Biden administration to sanction Brite Semiconductors, a China-based Joint Venture between US-based Norwest Venture Partners and SMIC. SMIC is a critical actor in China's ambitions to produce advanced chips, receiving billions of dollars in subsidies from Chinese state-backed investment vehicles. 💡 Rubio's concerns consider the risk of tech transfer, due to Brite's access to US technology and investments, by aiding China's industrial and military goals through its connection to SMIC. As global dynamics shift and export control reform appears on the horizon, decisionmakers need access actionable industry data to shape policy. ⤵️ 🚀 Datenna's platform provides intelligence on over 40 million companies, flagging national security risks to foreign governments.
