Trans-national Holocaust research, commemoration and education is the mission of the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI), and its main challenge is the wide dispersal of sources and expertise across many institutions. EHRI overcomes such fragmentation by connecting sources, institutions and people. The EHRI Portal enables online access to information about Holocaust sources, no matter where they are located. The Conny Kristel Fellowship gives researchers access to the resources of the world's twenty leading Holocaust archives. EHRI's extensive programme of networking and training brings people together. Last but not least, EHRI promotes innovative tools that advance the digital transformation of Holocaust research. Although EHRI’s primary impact is scientific, it also advances a wider social and political agenda. The recent rise of antisemitism, xenophobia and aggressive nationalisms demonstrate that Holocaust research is never a purely academic concern, but a prerequisite for open and non-discriminatory societies across Europe and beyond. EHRI is currently supported by two project consortia consisting of 27 partners from across Europe, Israel and the United States. EHRI is funded by the EU.

It plays a crucial role in the study and documentation of the Holocaust, for example, in the collection, storage, and sharing of data, as well as the documentation, preserving, archiving, or disposing of data securely and ethically. EHRI launched the new free-to-access online course ‘Aligning Holocaust Data with Open Research and FAIR Data Principles‘, which was produced by our partner Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) and offered on the platform OpenPlato. Designed for archivists working in Holocaust-related Collection Holding Institutions (CHI), researchers, data librarians, students, and curators, the video and text-based course aims to teach best practices in open and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) research and how to implement these practices in one’s own work through effective data management: https://lnkd.in/dwbUCDJv

Congratulations to EHRI European Holocaust Research Infrastructure on their inauguration as a permanent organization! In a ceremony held at Muzeum Historii Żydów Polskich POLIN in Warsaw last weekend, the ten founding member countries reiterated their support of Holocaust research and documentation by signing a symbolic declaration. On the eve of the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, this was a unique opportunity to reflect on the enduring significance of Holocaust research, documentation and commemoration in contemporary European societies. We look forward to more opportunities to work together. Our shared commitment to ensuring open access to Holocaust-related sources and expertise has never been more important. Extraordinary day in Warsaw today, representing the UK in inaugurating the latest European Research Infrastructure Consortium. the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure. https://lnkd.in/eFQEJa5F It took place at the wonderful POLIN Museum of the (1,000 Year) History of the Polish Jews, on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto, in the presence of 92 year old Krystyna Budnicka, who as an 11 year old Jewish girl hid in a bunker built by her brothers for 9 months during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising before fleeing through the sewers, and somehow survived to tell her story to the next generation, but whose entire family perished in the furnace of the Shoah. The fact it is the eve of the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of the Aushwitz-Birkenau Nazi death camp, and Holocaust Memorial Day, made it even more poignant. This initiative will lead to better research on the Holocaust, joining up hugely disparate sources and researchers across Europe and beyond. A true honour, and showing the value of international collaboration in science with our European friends and partners.

Brieven van vermoorde familieleden, foto’s van concentratiekampen of gegevens van deportaties. Veel bronnen over de Holocaust zijn verspreid over duizenden archieven, musea en andere onderzoeksinstellingen. Dat maakt het lastig voor onderzoekers om toegang te krijgen tot de informatie die zij nodig hebben. En juist dat onderzoek naar ons verleden geeft een gezicht aan de verschrikkingen van deze periode, en kan een krachtig tegengif zijn voor het hedendaags antisemitisme. Daarom vind ik het een buitengewoon voorrecht dat Nederland de hoofdzetel krijgt van de internationale holocaustonderzoeksfaciliteit European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI). Hier worden alle openbare bronnen over de Holocaust uit verschillende landen gebundeld. Een belangrijke stap in de internationale samenwerking op het gebied van Holocaustonderzoek, educatie en herinnering. We're delighted that the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI) has been signed into being as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium with the UK as a founding member. The signing coincided with the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp at Auschwitz Birkenau on 27 January 1945. EHRI enables transnational Holocaust research, commemoration and education by connecting sources, institutions and people. This investment will provide important opportunities for UK-based researchers while raising the profile and accessibility of collections, archives and data held in this country. We're proud to have supported UK membership of EHRI and the development of the UK's own Holocaust research consortium through AHRC funding. #NIEUWS | Op zondag 26 januari is EHRI European Holocaust Research Infrastructure officieel als permanente Europese onderzoeksinfrastructuur gestart. De hoofdzetel hiervan zal bij het NIOD worden ondergebracht. Aan de vooravond van de herdenking van de bevrijding van Auschwitz, vandaag 80 jaar geleden, vond de inaugratieceremonie plaats in het Muzeum Historii Żydów Polskich POLIN in Warschau. Onder andere Minister Eppo Bruins (Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap) en NIOD-directeur Martijn Eickhoff waren hierbij aanwezig. EHRI heeft als doel bronnen en informatie over de Holocaust uit een groot aantal landen te verzamelen en toegankelijk te maken voor Holocaust-onderzoek. EHRI wordt een zogenoemde ERIC, een European Research Infrastructure Consortium. Hiermee is onderzoek naar de Holocaust ook voor de toekomst vastgelegd. ➡️ Meer informatie: https://ow.ly/9peJ50UNQaT
Today EHRI has officially been established as an ERIC following a decision of the European Commission. We are very proud to be an ERIC and thus secure the future of transnational Holocaust research.
