Over ons
FEMS is a pan-European scientific body campaigning to get science - and microbiology in particular - on the global agenda. Across all our Member Societies, we bring together around 30,000 professional microbiologists who are exploring microbiology and its impact on the world. We were set up in 1974 to promote microbiology across Europe, and today we are a growing coalition of over 50 Member Societies from 40+ countries. For almost as many years, the FEMS Journals have published trusted microbiological science from our community of researchers. We are currently gearing up for the much anticipated FEMS MICRO 2025: Congress & Exhibition, taking place in Milan, Italy, from 14-17 July 2025. This biennial event has established itself as the premier meeting for microbiologists, researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and early career scientists from around the world. FEMS MICRO 2025 promises an experience like no other, taking the best elements from our previous events, while building new top-class approaches to networking and engagement based on our community’s needs.

Last week, on December 5, 2024, I had the honor of being selected as one of the top 3 young women scientists in the “L’Oréal Women in Science – 2024” Ukrainian award (part of L’Oréal-UNESCO Global Program). While it’s not the main prize, it’s a significant achievement that motivates me to keep pushing forward. #Science in #Ukraine is going through difficult times, but there are still valuable opportunities, including national, international grants and #mobility programs. I continue working as a Research Fellow at the Department of Biology of #Extremophilic Microorganisms at D.K. Zabolotny IMV of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and as a Visiting Researcher at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. I’m incredibly grateful for the support from Federation of European Microbiological Societies, #BioUkraine, and FEBS, which allowed me to attend congresses, conferences, and receive travel grants. These opportunities have opened doors, such as participating in EU-funded projects, joining the #GBMI group, and expanding my professional network🌍 The projects I am currently involved in, including the #HorizonEurope VINNY Project🍇, focus on developing new approaches for environmental bioremediation, the development of innovative nanomaterials and #biopesticides to combat #phytopathogens. These collaborations are important for my #home country #Ukraine, which is in urgent need of new effective solutions for land damaged by military actions. 💡 I have great hope that the results of these projects can also help to figure out the ways to restore Ukraine's lands🌱 The most important message of L'Oréal is to break down stereotypes about #STEMwomen. The scientific profession isn’t just for men or confined to a laboratory. It’s a field full of creative opportunities, travel, and discovery. Anyone, from anywhere, can make a difference. You won’t always get what you want or have your ideas accepted, but stay true to your goals, keep trying, apply for grants and collaborate. Growth comes through mobility, continuous learning, and teamwork! 💪 A fun thought we were discussing after ceremony: How do #scientists become scientists? For me, it all started with bees 🐝. My grandfather was a passionate beekeeper, and after his passing, my dad continued the tradition. I used to help him with the bees, and we even went to the market to sell honey! 🍯 Around 13, I chose bees as my topic for a regional biology competition and worked on the project with my dad’s help. It was the last good thing we did together. That win sparked my deeper interest in biological sciences🎉 That's why I strongly agree with the concept of the L'Oréal Foundation - familiarity with science is important from childhood, as the experiences we have in the past play a significant role in shaping our future career choices🌱 #STEM women of Ukraine and the world, let’s unite, support the new generation, and move this world forward together💪🌍
