  • With fond memories we look back on our symposium Latent Assemblies. Last Friday FIBER, together with the Artificial Times MA programme at @Sandberg Instituut, organized a full day of talks, offering a space for knowledge exchange on the use of AI in artistic practices. The symposium aimed to explore various strategies and creative processes adopted by artists working with machine learning and AI technologies within sonic and audiovisual installations, performances and music releases. From creative workflows with multiple machine learning agents to alternative approaches to AI through philosophy and non-Western knowledge systems. It also delved into pressing issues such as ownership, copyrights, and artist income in a landscape where styles and aesthetics are increasingly co-opted by big tech companies. Central to the discussion were urgent questions about the future of AI-assisted creativity: Can we envision communal ways to organize and shape a sustainable, AI-influenced artistic practice? We want to thank everyone who participated within this event! Our gratitude to all the speakers who revealed their work processes, thoughts and experiences, and the audience for joining us! Latent Assemblies is part of our ongoing Reassemble Lab programme and a collaborative effort between Artificial Times, Sandberg Instituut Made possible by Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst (AFK) Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie and Pictoright Pictures: Alex Heuvink

  • Aural Spaces artist focus: Loraine James is internationally known for her emotionally charged electronic music, where influences from IDM, ambient music, drill and R&B seamlessly blend with a jazz-rooted spirit. FIBER invites the multifaceted London-based musician to perform a newly commissioned composition in 4DSOUND, after a coproduction residency at MONOM. On Friday, December 13, James will explore the innovative spatial sound instrument to create and spatialise a unique sonic landscape in the Recital Hall of the Concertgebouw. In recent years, Loraine James has emerged as one of the most forward-thinking producers of the moment. Being exposed to the parallel cultures of North London, she started developing a personal music language from an early age. Thanks to her mum's obsession with anything from heavy metal to calypso, James was able to experience music from the start. With the piano as a starting point, she further developed herself in the area of electronic music production using a MIDI keyboard and a laptop. In her low-key home studio, the artist channeled her wide range of interests into a personal sound that in time evolved into an identifiable signature. Her artistic voice caught the global attention and universal praise, because of its honest, emotional sound and the ability of James to connect listeners worldwide through an isolated and anxious time of pandemic lockdowns. In later works she reconciles with her own identity as a Black British artist, responds to pioneering composers as Julius Eastman, underscoring the revolutionary power of gay, Black artistry. • In what ways does the art of making sound, visuals and storytelling fundamentally change when using AI and prompting? How can traditional cartographic methods be reinterpreted through the lens of AI? What does working with machine learning offer to exploring states of consciousness and emotional data? FIBER and Artificial Times invite you to Latent Assemblies, a one-day symposium on the interplay of artistic making and AI. We are excited to announce the (almost) full lineup of our amazing speakers. ⬇ SPEAKERS agustina woodgate, Farzaneh Nouri, LOREM, Portrait XO (Rania Kim), U2p050, Abdelrahman Hassan (moderator). More to come. During the symposium, the speakers will share their approach to various machine learning systems, how they work with AI in general, and how it helps them within their artistic research. Along with the illumination of these processes, critical and socio-cultural questions will be addressed, which are inseparable from working with AI. Join the conversation next week at the Sandberg Instituut and get your ticket! • Reminder: only 4 days left to see our exhibition Neighbouring Frequencies at de Brakke Grond — until Sunday, June 16! Goldfinches, crackling paper, and noise pollution in the North Sea. Neighbouring Frequencies presents five artworks that use sound to help us experience our environment in new ways. The exhibition showcases the work of five sound-artists who are exemplary of the interconnectedness and richness of sound art in and around The Netherlands & Belgium. Each artwork is the result of a blend of artistic research, composition, sound design, and the creation of hybrid instruments, showcasing the dynamic and interdisciplinary nature of contemporary sound art. Listening to their sound- sculptures and installations, you will learn about hidden dimensions of our environment and the relationships between landscapes, humans, and non-humans. With work by Els Viaene, Floris Vanhoof, Oussama Tabti, Stijn Demeulenaere and Luis Lecea Romera Neighbouring Frequencies is a collaborative initiative between FIBER Festival , STUK – House for Dance, Image & Sound, de Brakke Grond and DutchCulture Amsterdam For more info ➤ 🔗 in bio Running until 16 June 12:00 - 17:00 Free entrance @ de Brakke Grond 📸 Pieter Kers, Alex Heuvink, Carmen Vollebregt

  • Tones that fracture, accumulate, and subsequently become powerful drones, spatialized by the 4DSOUND system. Artists move through the space, utilising a multitude of organs and electronic instruments. The opening concert of FIBER Festival 2024 provided an immersive and stunning experience. We begin our recap of the 9th edition with this first selection of photos from het Orgelpark, where we drifted away with the unravelling soundscapes of Casimir Geelhoed and explored spectral realms with Maria W Horn and Mats Erlandsson Casimir Geelhoed took center stage with the premiere of 'Deviations,' a composition featuring intricate sonic landscapes, specially commissioned by FIBER and Orgelpark. The piece, played on a 12-channel 4DSOUND system, combined a hyperorgan and live electronics, breathing new life into an old instrument. Geelhoed explored the fragile balance between stability and instability through subtle changes that led to chaotic sonic movements, fading harmonies, and dramatic shifts in heavy sound structures. With the help of the 4DSOUND system, the sonic landscapes came even more to life, enhancing the experience of different sonic textures. Using the length of their individual breaths to determine the duration of each chord, Maria W. Horn and Mats Erlandsson performed a series of unique sonic pieces, presented on various hyper-organs and electronic instruments throughout the Orgelpark. By combining their breaths within their composition, the piece resulted in a minimalist structure of extended tones, forging a deep connection between the body and the organ through the medium of air." The former church was a canvas of dreams, painted by Zalán Szakács’ delicate light sculptures that whispered their ghostly echoes along the walls. We kindly thank het Orgelpark, 4DSOUND and CBK Rotterdam for their support.
