DONATE NOW: https://lnkd.in/ejeW-i8N Our approach is working As green shareholders, we got five major oil and gas companies to pledge to reduce their carbon emissions. We can honestly say we are the most impactful shareholders in Big Oil. The empire strikes back 2024 was a tough year for anyone concerned about the climate crisis: Trump was re-elected, Shell won the appeal in Milieudefensie's climate case, COP29 in Baku failed and even in the Netherlands we now have a government that does not take the climate crisis seriously. For Follow This, it was also a tough year. ExxonMobil dragged us to court in Texas to prevent shareholders from using their voting rights for change. Thanks to donations, we were able to pay our lawyers. The lawsuit is now thankfully over. Being sued by an oil major is intimidating, but at the same time it is proof that our approach works. Time is running out to prevent disastrous climate change. With governments failing, green shareholders are the last hope in the fight against climate change. Now is the time for Follow This to grow. Help us keep up the pressure because Big Oil can make or break the Paris climate agreement. Thank you very much in advance for your donation! On behalf of the Follow This team, I wish you happy holidays and an impactful 2025. Mark van Baal, Founder of Follow This DONATE NOW: https://lnkd.in/ejeW-i8N

👔 Daarvoor gebruikt Follow This financiële argumenten, in plaats van emotionele. Fossil fuel transportation plays a significant role in the shipping industry. Nearly 40% of global shipping is dedicated to moving fossil fuels (oil, coal, gas) around the world. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eRtK2FyA #followthis #bigoil #fossilfuels #climatechange

Countries promised to ditch fossil fuels. Instead they’re booming. This Washington Post highlights the conflict between the urgent need for climate action and the resistance of big oil companies to transition away from fossil fuels. Mark van Baal, founder of Follow This, accuses companies like Shell of prioritizing profit over climate action, stating, “We’re dealing with companies that want to go on with oil and gas as long as possible. This is their comfort zone. This is how they got to the top of the pyramid.” Despite previous commitments, Shell has weakened its emissions reduction targets, opting to expand natural gas production and maintain oil output. Van Baal criticizes this approach, saying it amounts to a bet "on the failure of Paris." Read more: https://lnkd.in/e5qGf2RN --- Follow This unites shareholders to transform Big Oil from within. Financial Times: Offshore oil is back. At what cost? Deepwater drilling is back: oil companies are investing heavily in deepwater projects. The resurgence of offshore oil drilling, fueled by new technologies, high energy prices and geopolitical events like the war in Ukraine, is worrying environmentalists. They fear the long-term impact of these projects, which could lock in decades of fossil fuel production, contradicting climate goals. Follow This founder Mark van Baal: “Big Oil’s attitude shows a lack of imagination beyond oil and gas. At a time when the world must rapidly transition away from hydrocarbons, these companies are betting on decades-long fossil fuel projects and pouring huge amounts of capital into a market that will start declining before the end of the decade.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/emWEedjG Join Follow This and become part of the investor movement transforming Big Oil from within, securing a profitable and sustainable future. _______________________________ Let's speed up the clean energy transition. Court setback amplifies investor responsibility to reform Big Oil A Dutch court overturned the 2021 ruling requiring Shell to reduce its CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030. However, the court upheld that Shell still has an obligation to reduce emissions, although it didn’t specify a target. Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth), the environmental group that brought the case, expresses disappointment but remains determined to hold polluters accountable. “We will keep fighting until all polluters have adopted sustainable practices, Milieudefensie said. Follow This founder Mark van Baal: “the court’s decision to relieve Shell from the obligation to cut its carbon emissions by 45% is a setback in the fight against climate change. Nevertheless, the court states that the company has an obligation to reduce its emissions. Currently, Shell lacks targets for significantly reducing its Scope 3 emissions by 2030.” “The court’s decision makes clear that investors, the owners of the company, have a key role in holding the company to its climate obligations and steering them towards clean energy.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eEYCr6Qd #followthis #milieudefensie #shell #climatechange

Investors called to transform Big Oil amid Trump’s pro-fossil fuel agenda With Trump in the White House driving a pro-fossil fuel agenda, the climate crisis intensifies. The Paris Climate Agreement stands on shaky ground, and the fight against climate change grows ever more precarious. Trump promises to expand oil, gas, and coal production, rolling back regulations and targeting renewable initiatives. His stance on climate change, seen as a “hoax,” weakens global efforts like the Paris Agreement, jeopardizing climate goals. Throughout his campaign, Trump pledged to roll back climate regulations; dismantle the Inflation Reduction Act, a cornerstone of recent environmental policy; and prioritize the fossil fuel industry, making clear his limited enthusiasm for renewable energy sources, which he views with some skepticism, reserving interest primarily for nuclear power. Institutional investors are now seen as the final safeguard against climate change, especially given Trump’s pro-fossil fuel stance and his plan to fire SEC chair Gary Gensler, which could reduce corporate climate accountability. Investors, particularly those in Big Oil, face a duty to protect the economy from climate risks like extreme weather, which threatens billions in pension funds. By pushing these companies to shift from fossil fuels to clean energy, institutional investors play a critical role in averting the climate crisis. Shell lowers investments in clean energy to 8%, endangering the company's future PRESS RELEASE Shell’s investments in the division Renewables & Energy Solutions (RES) are down to 8% of the oil major’s overall capital expenditure, the oil major’s third quarter results reveal. The backtrack in investments in clean energy comes after Shell scrapped emissions reduction targets in March. At least 92% of investments remain tied to fossil fuels. “By continuing to bet on fossil fuel expansion, the board of Shell jeopardizes the future of the company,” says Mark van Baal, founder of activist shareholder group Follow This. The IEA forecasts a decline in oil and gas demand after 2029. “Fossil fuel growth delays the transition and increases the risk of a carbon lock-in, which will make it harder to pivot to renewables each year.” “Moreover, Shell’s investments in fossil fuels are in collision course with the Paris Climate Agreement that requires almost halving emissions by 2030.” Investors hold the key “Investors who are committed to Paris must change the mind of the board of Shell. Big Oil can make or break the Paris Accord and Shell could lead and thrive in the energy transition.” Read the entire press release here: https://lnkd.in/esgkWjS7 ______________________________________ Big Oil must change, or Paris will fail.
