🔌 💡 How do we handle supply chain-management in our Electronics Department? 🔌 💡 Engineering is not always just engineering. 🤓 Formula Student Team Delft has an extensive inventory of electronic components which over the years has grown to a total of over 100.000 parts of which almost 2000 are unique! In order to streamline the process of ordering and producing our electronics we make use of an inventory management software which is provided by PartsBox! So how does an autonomous electric car think? 🤔 🤯 A Formula Student race car is an incredibly complex machine ⚙️, with a lot of computing power to extract every last bit of performance. The circuit boards in our car need to talk to each other to know what exactly is going on. 📢 ‼️ Our wiring system makes this possible! Over 200m of wires makes sure the car's multiple 'brains' 🧠 can work together, which enables the car to use complex features like traction control and torque vectoring. Of course these wires need to be arranged properly, and more importantly must be protected! 🦾 🎇 Whether it is the high voltage wiring delivering 80kW to our motors, or the CAN wires enabling the communication between the circuit boards, they all need to be preserved from all weather conditions, g-forces and vibrations that come with driving a car at the limit. Luckily, HellermannTyton Global had the generosity to help us out in this difficult task. HellermannTyton Global is a leader-company that focuses on sustainable solutions for cable management and cable protections. 🤩 💯 They supplied us with equipment and tools to bundle and protect our wiring systems with over 20m of wiring loom. On top of that, we were also able to use their high quality products to create an effective wiring harness. Of course our race car needs to perform, but staying stylish and recognisable to the outside world is also important! ✨ We start the process of designing our livery with our Brand Guidelines and the wishes of our name partner once the shape of our car is finished. Our team members throw in ideas, taking inspiration from previous cars and other racing cars 🏎️, Then our designers choose the best parts of everyone’s ideas to create a few full designs. We work with professionals who tell us what’s possible or not then decide on a design which then is made in our modeling software! Now it needs to be wrapped. Car wrapping is a method in which a special, high-quality film is applied over the exterior of the car. This allows us to customise the appearance of our car just the way we like it. How does a Formula Student racecar keep it cool? 🥶 In a small racecar like our DUT24, our cooling solutions have to be compact to have impact. Our motors and accumulator generate a lot of heat when performing at their maximum, getting up to temperatures above the boiling temperature of water! This creates the need for effective cooling systems. A pump forces water through a system of cooling tubes at a rate of 8 liters per minute. The water is led trough a radiator, after which the heat is dissipated by the fans provided by ebm-papst. ebm-papst is the world’s leading manufacturer of electric motors and fans.
