In Transition When women who have been raised in traditional cultures migrate to modern Western societies, they often encounter a significant cultural shock. In many traditional cultures, women's rights are heavily contingent on the permission of their father or husband. These rights can include the right to divorce, the right to raise their children after divorce, the right to travel outside their country, and even the right to have a job. In contrast, modern Western societies tend to support women against all forms of harassment, often more so than they do for men. This can create a stark contrast for women from traditional backgrounds, who are suddenly faced with a society that imposes no such limitations on them. This newfound freedom, combined with the possibility of financial independence, can be overwhelming and lead to a significant cultural delay. Cultural delay is a phenomenon in social psychology where certain aspects of modernity come into our lives while we are not yet culturally prepared or mature enough for them. As a result, our behavior can become neither fully traditional nor fully modern, leading to cognitive dissonance. For women experiencing this cultural delay, their behavior can become complicated, aggressive, and paradoxical. One common pattern observed is that these women often identify with the aggressor, whether that be their father, husband, cultural norms, state laws, Sharia law, or even the symbolic presence of God. This identification can lead to aggressive and rebellious behavior towards all aggressive symbols. When this cultural phenomenon is combined with a personal history of conflicting relationships with their fathers, the situation can become even more complex. Women in this position may find themselves grappling with a range of emotions and behaviors that are difficult to navigate. I have personally experienced this phenomenon in my life and have observed similar trends in other cases with similar backgrounds. It’s important to understand these complexities to better support women through their transitions and cultural adjustments.
