Misinformation and disinformation are not just nuisances—they undermine trust in science, disrupt public health campaigns, and exacerbate health inequities worldwide. Addressing these issues is critical to safeguarding global health.
On Wednesday, November 27, the symposium "Navigating Truths: Demystifying Mis- and Disinformation in (Global) Health" took place. The event, organised by Kenniscentrum Global Health (KCGH) and NVTG Dutch Society for Tropical Medicine & Global Health, brought together professionals, experts, and students at the Geertekerk in Utrecht to tackle these pressing challenges and explore innovative strategies and solutions.
The day took off with two leading voices in the fight against misinformation: Sander van der Linden (University of Cambridge) set the tone with insights into psychological vaccination, introducing practical strategies to build resilience against false information. Dannagal Young (University of Delaware) followed with an engaging talk on the emotional and media-driven dynamics fueling misinformation, emphasising its significant impact on public health systems and trust.
A special highlight of the day was the awarding of the KCGH Thesis/PhD Prize, recognising the next generation of leaders addressing global health challenges. These students are paving the way for innovative solutions to combat misinformation. Congratulations to the winners: Lennart Maljaars, Tom Jacobs, Robert Dasović, and Lara Schmale-Hüsemann
