  • 🌾 The malting barley is in! 🌾 The 2024 malting barley harvest across Europe has been completed. In the meantime, we conducted visits to key malting barley regions across Western Europe to gather data and collect a wide range of samples. Our team analyzed and micromalted these samples. Additionally, we evaluated the first industrial production batches, assessing both the malting process and first brewing outcomes. With these insights, we've created our annual Crop Report, with highlights and insights on the 2024 crop of malting barley and shared it with our valued customers all over the world. 👀 Curious to see the Cropsheet as well? Just send an email to communications@hollandmalt.com, and we'll be happy to share it with you! #MaltingBarley #Harvest #HollandMalt #Crop2024

The challenge we face might be global, but the actions we take have an impact. This Sustainability Month, we want to take a moment to reflect on the positive impact we can make —by technological innovations like our emission-free malthouse, smart partnerships with farmers but also by continuously striving to operate smarter, greener. 💡 Let’s use this Sustainability Month to inspire meaningful change. What are your plans for the future? How are you going to make a positive impact? Let’s collaborate! #Sustainability #PositiveImpact #HollandMalt #ForTheFuture

Then and now ⬅ In 2004, we opened our second malthouse in Eemshaven. What has changed in the past 20 years? What was Eemshaven, at the province of Groningen (Netherlands), like back then, and how does it compare to today? We were among the first companies in the area, recognizing the strategic advantage of direct sea access with no need for canals or locks. The port of Eemshaven was originally constructed in the 1970s, but while the port has been around for 50 years, it took nearly three decades for significant industrial development to take off. This century, Eemshaven did take off. It has evolved into the leading energy hub in Northwest Europe, generating around one-third of the total energy production in the Netherlands.⚡It has not only developed strongly in sustainable energy but the port is also a great logistic hub for Western Europe shipping routes nowadays. We are proud that we have been able to witness from the beginning how the Eemshaven has transformed into what it is today. And with our DNA, that involves sustainability, innovation and forward-thinking, we were happy to be in the middle of this transition. This year, we proudly opened the world’s first emission-free malthouse. The environment of Eemshaven has certainly played a role in this achievement. #Eemshaven #EnergyHub #ThenandNow #HollandMalt

  • Who would have thought that there is a connection between malt and cucumbers? 🤔 For us maltsters, the germination phase is where the magic happens. Over 5 days, we carefully control temperature, moisture, airflow, and oxygen levels to ensure the grains grow just right. This is when the grain’s inner structure changes, breaking down proteins and cell walls so the starches inside become easier to access. Germination requires constant attention. We monitor the environment every hour to make sure everything is in balance. Even small changes, such as the speed at which the grain is turned, can have a big impact on the final product. For us, it’s all about precision and passion. Every step of the process is essential in delivering the best quality malt for our partners. Here’s a fun fact: when everything is going well, you might notice a fresh cucumber-like smell coming from the germinating barley! It is an indicator for us maltsters that the barley is converting into malt successfully! Next time you visit one of our malthouses, see if you can catch that smell as well. 🥒🌱 #Maltsters #Quality #Germination #HollandMalt #Craftmanship

  • Holland Malt was founded over 100 years ago with the goal to deliver quality malt at all times, now and for future generations. It’s about entrepreneurship for the long-term. The entrepreneurial spirit of our founder paved the way for Holland Malt in the 1930s. In 1940, he opened his own maltings in Lieshout. He and his sons excelled at pioneering. In the 1970s, one of the first tower malthouses in the world was opened. Back in the 1980s, efforts were already being made to use energy more efficiently. And importantly, from the very beginning, the needs of other brewers were heard: Providing the highest quality malt to domestic and international brewers became a reality. On the picture below you can see where we all work for. Johannes invited his grandchildren to the inauguration of our first malthouse. With the forward thinking mentality that is routed in our culture, we want to make choices that benefit future generations. We still do so today, because it is in our DNA. #HollandMalt #Culture #BackToOurRoots #Entrepeneurship

  • Meet our colleagues!     Our colleague Chris rademaker started as a Process Operator at Holland Malt in 2007 and has grown into his current position as Quality Control Operator at our malthouse in Eemshaven. In his work, he is the linking pin between technology, planning and production.     Chris explains that he likes the diversity in his work at Holland Malt:    “We are working with a natural product, which means, that no batch of barley is the same. There is a difference between summer and winter barley and each variety requires its own way of processing. No two days are ever the same.”    Alongside the diversity in work, Chris also mentions the diversity within his team: “We are a diverse group consisting of different kinds of people. Nevertheless, we are a real team. We are all here to make things work, do things smarter and to move together into the same direction every day. This really describes the culture of Holland Malt.”    Interested in working at Holland Malt? A glimpse behind the brew kettles of one of our craft beer heroes: the Gooische Bierbrouwerij 🍺 In the food hall MOUT in the middle of Hilversum, you’ll find the Gooische Bierbrouwerij. What started as a homebrewing hobby has grown into an award-winning brewery, crowned last year with the title best beer of the Netherlands with its Schwarz beer. We spoke with co-owner and brewmaster Gijs Troost about the brewery’s origins and vision. Gijs: “The idea of starting a brewery became concrete on a hill in France at a local market. The atmosphere and delicious local products were so enjoyable that I felt inspired. I have always dreamed of starting my own brewery and a regional beer in Hilversum didn’t exist yet, so I seized the opportunity.” To create a regional product, the brewery doesn't want to import products overseas and aims to work with local suppliers as much as possible. "This is not only sustainable by minimizing travel distances, but it also fits the brewery’s vision", explains Gijs. "Working with Holland Malt was a logical choice. They produce a Dutch Pilsner Malt using barley 100% grown locally on Dutch soil. For us that means that the malt has a regional sustainable origin. And above all, I am very satisfied with the quality.” The Gooische Bierbrouwerij plans to continue its sustainability efforts in the future. They already offer a social workplace and want to expand soon and start projects like water and CO2 reuse. Interested in working with Holland Malt? Promising barley Insights from Scandinavia To be able to provide the highest quality malt every day, we source our malting barley from across Europe. Two important regions for brewing barley are Sweden and Denmark. Recently, our CEO, Jos Jennissen, joined 40 other maltsters, brewers, and malting barley suppliers on a crop tour in Scandinavia to gain insights in the upcoming harvest. Jos Jennissen: “It was great to reconnect with colleagues from the industry and see the barley fields firsthand. The crop looked promising, and the consensus is that we're on track for a harvest in line with the 5-year average to perhaps slightly below. It was a valuable and interesting two days spent sharing insights and experiences”. Some insights: 💪In Denmark, protein levels are tending low, while in Sweden they are acceptable. 🌾Disease pressure across both regions appears to be minimal. ⛅️Despite the significant rainfall, limited sunlight and late and prolonged seeding period, the results are in fact positive. 🍺This week the harvest will go to its peak. A big thank you to DAKOFO, DLG Group, Lantmännen, Danish Agro and Copenhagen Merchants for organizing this event!
