Start with shorter sessions and gradually increase your time as your body adapts. For optimal results, 2–3 sessions per week are often enough to boost recovery, resilience, and energy levels. Before you know it, your body goes into stress mode, and you’re unable to enjoy a time meant for connection and recharging with your loved ones. Take a step back and ground yourself in the present moment. Focus on what truly matters by using this breathing technique. Your breathing is directly connected to your mental health. Have you ever noticed how your breathing becomes shallower and faster when you’re feeling stressed? Our breath holds the key to unlocking the autonomic nervous system: a regulator of vital bodily functions such as digestion, body temperature, and heart rate. This system consists of two branches with contrasting roles—the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. Today, we’d like to zoom in on the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the ‘rest-and-digest’ response, fostering relaxation and recovery. Activating this system slows the breath, decreases the heart rate, and boosts saliva production and digestion. How do we activate the parasympathetic nervous system? Through the 4-4-6-2 breathing technique. • Sit in an upright position and make sure your arms and legs are relaxed while staying grounded to your surface. • Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. • Inhale for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds, exhale for 6 seconds, and hold your breath again for 2 seconds. • Repeat this cycle 7 to 10 times. • Are you finding it difficult to stay focused? Place your hand on your abdomen and feel it rise and fall with each breath.
