Afgelopen weekend verscheen docent Esther Quaedackers in het Parool met een artikel over "little big histories of Amsterdam," ter ere van het 750-jarig bestaan van onze stad. Studenten werden uitgedaagd om dieper te kijken dan de geschiedenis van een enkel kunstwerk in de stad door ook de maatschappelijke context en de oorsprong van de gebruikte grondstoffen te onderzoeken. Wat begint bij iets kleins, zoals een beeldhouwwerk, leidt hen naar de grotere geschiedenis van onze wereld en het heelal. Zoals Esther het verwoordt: "Alle laagjes van de geschiedenis komen samen in een object, en daar hebben de studenten naar gekeken." Dit najaar start er aan de UvA een keuzevak getiteld "Little big histories van Amsterdam", vanwege het 750-jarig bestaan van de stad. Through this approach, students are challenged to look beyond the history of a single artwork in the city by also exploring its societal context and the origins of the materials used. Starting with something small, like a sculpture, they learn about the broader history of our world and the universe. As Esther puts it: "All layers of history come together in an object, and that's what the students have looked at." This fall, the UvA is launching an elective course titled "Little big histories of Amsterdam," following Amsterdam's 750th anniversary. ✨ New interdisciplinary master Complex Systems and Policy starting in September ‘25 ✨ Starting in September 2025, the Universiteit van Amsterdam launches a new Master’s programme: Complex Systems and Policy, developed by the Instituut voor Interdisciplinaire Studies - UvA (IIS) and the UvA Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), together with experts from all faculties. 💡Combining data science and societal challenges  This master’s integrates data analysis and modelling with policy design, preparing graduates to bridge the gap between science and real-world policymaking on health and sustainability issues. Students will engage with societal challenges, collaborating with stakeholders such as municipalities, ministries, and NGOs to craft innovative policy solutions. 🤝 Career perspectives  Societal problems, from health disparities to energy transitions, demand more than just good data—they require policies that make an impact. As Elisabeth IJmker, curriculum developer of the programme, says: "We need experts who can turn data into real change. This programme is designed to train them."    🔑 Entry requirements & opportunities  The programme welcomes students from diverse academic backgrounds, with prior knowledge in programming, statistics, and social science. Zo ontwikkelen ze zich tot specialisten mét een brede oriëntatie. Na deze bachelor kunnen studenten verder in een specialistische master, maar kunnen ze ook interdisciplinair doorstuderen.
