STM, as part of the Creative Rights in AI Coalition, supports this statement in response to the UK Government's consultation on copyright and AI. Generative AI developers must take responsibility by seeking permission and engaging with rights holders to establish fair licensing agreements. Such collaboration ensures creative control and fuels a sustainable innovation ecosystem that benefits all stakeholders. Over the past year, United2Act — a joint project by COPE and STM — has been hard at work addressing the growing threat of #papermills — entities producing fraudulent research at scale and undermining trust in science. New recommendations have been published that are already sparking vital conversations about how we can tackle this issue together. We encourage you to dive into the full paper, which explores five critical research questions essential for understanding and combating paper mills. Pressed for time? Thanks Phill Jones for sharing your reflections on the recent STM Innovator Fair. It was inspiring to see so many innovative concepts that apply new technologies to bolster some of the long-standing, core tenets of academic publishing. And, echoing your point, we hope that events like these help to move us from a challenge of scarcity to a mindset of abundance when it comes to tools and metrics to uphold #researchintegrity. We're proud to announce that STM has joined the newly formed Creative Rights in AI Coalition. As generative AI continues to reshape the landscape of innovation, protecting copyright and fostering collaboration between the creative and tech sectors has never been more crucial. The Coalition is calling on the UK government to adopt three guiding principles for AI policy: - Dynamic licensing markets – Respect for copyright underpins innovation and ensures a sustainable ecosystem for creative works. - Transparency – Creators deserve control over how their works are used and clear accountability from AI developers. - Growth & innovation – Robust copyright protections fuel economic growth in the creative and tech sectors while enabling the UK to lead globally in this space. Our goal? A future where the creative and tech industries thrive together in a fair, transparent, and collaborative marketplace. We’re calling on the government, tech sector, and creators to join us in shaping an AI future that values human creativity and collaboration. #creativerightsinai Learn more >> https://lnkd.in/e25bp_pb

Last week was incredible - from presenting at the Vesalius Innovation Awards to attending #STM2024! 🎯 Research integrity and AI in scholarly publishing took central stage at STM , reinforcing our belief that technology should empower, not replace, human expertise. The discussions were inspiring and productive - I'm leaving these events with a clear action plan for Prophy. Exciting announcements coming soon! Thank you to the Karger Publishers team and STM organizers for bringing our community together. These events reminded me once again why I love being part of scholarly publishing - meeting friends, old and new, who share our passion for advancing science.
