Navigating Lithium Battery Safety Onboard: Why SOP Compliance Matters. Last week, during an insightful conversation with a highly respected captain, a critical challenge came to light: the difficulty of adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) for lithium battery safety onboard. The captain highlighted how failing to meet these procedures could escalate risks in emergency scenarios, potentially leading to catastrophic outcomes. This discussion resonated deeply, emphasizing the urgency of having practical and reliable solutions for lithium battery storage and charging on superyachts. SOP's are at the heart of every onboard Safety Management System (SMS), and without the right products, tools or infrastructure, even the most skilled crew can face insurmountable obstacles when things go wrong. With this in mind, we embarked on further research to address this pressing issue. The result is this article, where we aim to shed light on the importance of SOP compliance and offer actionable pathways to enhance safety onboard through advanced lithium storage solutions. Join us as we explore how aligning Liiontek's technology with safety standards can safeguard lives and assets in a rapidly electrifying maritime environment. https://lnkd.in/e2rGNyUd

On Monday, Liiontek was on-site at the Fisacon factory to inspect the first batch of RAMBSS modules before they were shipped to a notable yacht client. During our visit, Fisacon received the approved Design Appraisal Document (DAD) from Lloyd’s—a remarkable milestone for a company that started with just an idea a few years ago. This concept has evolved into an industry-leading solution with significant advantages not only for yachts but for any company needing safe battery storage options for staff. Lloyd’s recognized these benefits clearly in the DAD. For example, with these modules installed, the stringent requirement for an A60 fire-rated battery storage room can be lowered to A0. If you’d like more insight into what’s outlined in the DAD and how these modules can make a difference both onboard and onshore, we’re here to help. https://lnkd.in/eWbbrafF
THIS IS A NEW MILESTONE FOR THE SAFE CHARGING AND STORAGE OF WATERTOYS LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES ON BOARD SUPERYACHTS FISACON is proud to announce that Lloyd's Register EMEA has recommended our RAclan Maritime Battery Safety System (RAMBSS). Our RAMBSS modules meet the strictest safety requirements for superyachts and set a new level of reliability and safety when charging and storing lithium-ion batteries. A significant increase in insurance premiums can indeed drive the adoption of safety protocols like MGN 681 and Lloyd’s Joint Hull Committee (JHC) guidelines, especially within high-risk, high-value settings like yachts where safety lapses can lead to catastrophic damage. The rising risks associated with lithium-ion battery fires in electric-powered craft have caused insurers to reassess risk premiums, incentivizing vessel owners and managers to adopt preventive measures outlined in these guidelines. The MGN 681 and JHC protocols emphasize straightforward safety measures—like using certified storage and charging equipment for lithium-ion batteries—to significantly reduce fire hazards. These guidelines suggest that even relatively simple actions, such as proper storage boxes, can prevent the need for extensive dedicated spaces for battery storage, thereby minimizing operational constraints and costs. Although these safety products add to initial expenses, they protect the vessel's integrity and the crew’s safety, providing long-term savings on potential incident-related costs. Offering insurance discounts to those following the MGN and JHC guidelines would likely incentivize further compliance. From an insurance perspective, this approach would be fair as it aligns with a risk-based model: yachts that invest in recommended preventive measures would logically present a lower risk profile. Some insurers are already introducing incentives for vessels that adopt enhanced safety protocols, recognizing that preventive actions significantly mitigate risks. https://lnkd.in/eWbbrafF
Lithium-ion batteries’ role in yachting is growing. They offer superyachts a lightweight, efficient solution for powering everything from personal watercraft and tenders to e-bikes, phones, tablets, tools, toys, and appliances onboard. However, Scott Stamper, Managing Director of the National Marine Practice at US-based insurance brokerage Risk Strategies, warns that this surge in adoption may come at a steep cost: a rise in catastrophic fires on luxury vessels, with significant implications for insurance. As a director of a company, have you already taken into account the PGS 37-1 & 37-2 advisory rules? Don't forget that, as a director, you are liable when you haven't taken proper measures up into your processes when it all goes wrong. With the PGS 37-1&2 rules you need to act on the usage and storage of lithium batteries, also when they are installed in your E-bike, forklifts of EV's in a showroom. It even goes as far that when you are charging your EV's close to your office building you need to have products available whenever it catches fire. Have you installed the correct smoke and or fire detectors in your warehouse and do you know what they must be capable off? We have build our company around everything lithium powered, we have solutions for detections, storage & charging, extinguishing & suppression and perfect blankets for quick containment. Want to learn more about EV's: https://lnkd.in/eZJM-UAQ Be careful with your forklifts when charging overnight: https://lnkd.in/eAGZfP9V For more nformation of when you require assistance on site contact us via: info@liiontek.com

What scares you more on board your vessel when a fire alarm goes off? On board a yacht with a very high-end custom interior, a VLCC with a limited crew count or on a Ro-Ro carrier with 8000 cars, fire is scary and you know you must act since you are at open sea. Providing addition safety solutions for E-toys, portable communication devices or lihtium cars or forklifts on board is very inexpensive but creates so much more time to act. Please read the page we created specifically for the maritime industry and learn more about the risks and our solutions: https://lnkd.in/euGCPxtN

Are you aware of the costs involved when a lithium powered machine catches fires in your production environment? Lithium has one aspect to it when it catches fire which is even worse then the fire itself and that is the creation of HF (hydrofluoric acid) gasses, these extremely toxic gasses will contaminate everything it gets in contact with. This can lead to situations where the costs for clean-up can be 30x times the costs of a fire, these costs are without the contaminated products which aren't save for consumption anylonger. A lithium powered forklift can create 6.500.000 liters of this HF smoke and gas! Learn more about what we can do together to prevent these situations: https://lnkd.in/eAGZfP9V
