Yesterday the book launch of 'Defence Planning for Small and Middle Powers' took place. T. (Tim) Sweijs and Frans Osinga (who edited this book together with Saskia van Genugten) talked about the processes, practices and principles of defence planning in small and middle powers, in this event organised by KVBK in cooperation with War Studies Research Centre (WSRC) and HCSS - The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies. Tim Sweijs (Director of Research at HCSS and Senior Research Fellow at the War Studies Research Centre of the Netherlands Defence Academy), Frans Osinga (Professor of War studies at the Universiteit Leiden) and Saskia van Genugten (Senior Director at MacroScope Strategies (M2S)) give a comparative analysis based on many studies concerning smaller states and their defence strategies. Small and middle powers face different challenges and encounter different opportunities in comparison to bigger powers. Their resources are often limited, as well as their geographical reach and/or interest and their national military industry, leading to necessary choices and trade offs, concerning alliances, approaches, military innovations and many more.
