Over ons
The ever-increasing demands of the world in which we live lead to a constant search for better and safer products as well as material and energy savings. Enabling these innovations is our goal. Technological development is one of the main drivers of social, economic and cultural growth. The answers to challenges such as a prosperous economy and a sustainable society will substantially have to be generated by technological innovations. The most determining factor for the success of these technological innovations is the availability of suitable materials. We enable materials innovation. By increasing the knowledge base, connecting people, and sharing ideas materials innovations become reality. M2i helps partners solve their materials innovation challenges. We welcome you to our network.

Exciting PhD Position in Sustainable Steel Production Modelling: Solid Pile Formation in Reduced Electric Furnaces! 👇 Are you passionate about sustainability and eager to make a significant impact in Sustainable Steel Production? We are seeking talented and motivated PhD candidates to join our innovative research team at TU Delft | Mechanical Engineering. Our project focuses on preparing the steel industry for a green transition, funded by Nationaal Groeifonds. 🌍 This shift towards sustainable steel production involves substantial changes, requiring the development of novel processes and equipment. The first pivotal step is describing the raw material behaviour (granular materials such as iron ore) in the feed towards the Reduced Electric Furnace by deploying Discrete Element Modelling as a particle based method. As the first in a series of projects you will lay the foundation for modelling techniques that optimize furnace operations and reveal the complex phenomena within these furnaces. 🎯 Objective: Describe solid pile formation in a Reduced Electric Furnace by developing a Discrete Element Model (DEM) to describe pellet feeding in the furnace, including interactions between feeding, melting, and multiphase particulate flow. 🔗 Integration: Incorporate your model into larger CFD models, collaborating with other PhDs and researchers in the program. 📅 Start Date: October 1, 2024, or later 👨🏫 Supervisors: Prof. Dingena Schott (Machines and Materials Interactions #MMI) and Dr. Geert Keetels (Multiphase and Multiphysics Modelling) 🤝 Collaboration: Work closely with Tata Steel Nederland and Dutch universities. 🔗 Apply here: https://lnkd.in/ez_s9_5v Materials innovation institute M2i Vinod Dhiman Dirk Van Der Plas Daniel van Odyck Ali Emami Koopmans Pieter Daniel van Odyck Niels Deen Stefan Luding Yali Tang Kay Buist Geert Keetels Dingena Schott Erik Vegter Nitte Van Landschoot #SustainableSteel #PhDOpportunity #GreenTransition #SteelIndustry #ResearchAndDevelopment #CFDModelling #DiscreteElementModel #DEMModelling #EngineeringJobs #GroeienmetGroenStaal #GGS #GroeienmetGroenStaal #M2i #MachinesandMaterialsInteractions #MMI #TUDelft

The Department Materials Science and Engineering (TU Delft | Mechanical Engineering) is looking back on a joyful and successful Materials Technology Day 2024, on Friday July 5th. Thanks to the more than 100 industrial partners, Postdocs, PhD & MSc Students, and MSE Staff for joining us in this occasion marking the end of the academic year. This year, we hosted speakers involved in the Groeien met Groen Staal programme, who addressed the five major themes of the programme, from production and processing to use and recovery, and even system change. 🎀 The event took off with an unexpected surprise for Erik Vegter, managing director of the Materials innovation institute M2i, who was awarded an honorary membership of the TU Delft Materials Science and Engineering Department by Joris Dik (Department Chair) for his important role in the Groeien met Groen Staal programme, and because of the department’s valuable and longstanding relationship with M2i. The traditional PhD and Postdoc poster session show-cased the department’s versatility of research topics. Proud winners of the poster prizes of the MTD 2024: 🥇 Gautham Mahadevan Title: The Fault in Our Cars: Characterizing LME cracks during Resistance Spot Welding of Automotive Steels. 🥈 Dr. Virginia Bertolo Title: Liquid Metal Embrittlement: A Barrier to Greener and Safer Automotive Industry 🥉 Mohammed Hassan Title: CFD-DEM Modeling of Basic Oxygen Furnace: Maximizing Scrap Usage ♻ Groeien met Groen Staal Programme ♻ The Dutch steel sector faces a major transition. The production, processing, use and recovery of steel needs to be made significantly more sustainable by 2030 and completely CO2 neutral by 2050. Groeien met Groen Staal is a plan to achieve this, with a range of technologies based on hydrogen, renewable energy and circular iron and steel processing, completely removing the dependency on fossil-fuel based processes. This year M2i is organizing her 27th annual conference. Again we will expand our conference with the MaterialsNL Conference. This conference aims to bring the broad materials science community of the Netherlands together and will be held on the second day of our annual conference. Of course we will continue organizing our first community day as we have known it for years to present our M2i projects to each other. Venue of the conference will be National Sports Center Papendal in Arnhem again. We are looking forward to seeing you there! More information will follow in due course.
