Passive, distributed and unattended acoustic vector sensing capabilities for defense & security applications
Over ons
Microflown AVISA (www.microflown-avisa.com) develops and markets capabilities for the defense & security markets that do provide full and comprehensive 3D acoustic situational awareness. The enabler is the Microflown transducer, the worlds first and only sensor that measures acoustic particle velocity instead of sound pressure. The main sensor node platform is the Acoustic Multi Mission Sensor (AMMS). Its favorable SWaP features allow use: • as unattended ground sensor • on ground vehicles • on multi copters Capabilities are based on either networked or standalone versions of the AMMS, capable of: • detecting • localizing • tracking and • classifying all sorts of audible events/platforms, such as: • Small Arms Fire (SAF) • Rockets, artillery, mortars (RAM) • Helicopters and heavy ground vehicles • drones Networked capabilities offered include firmware/software for: • compound protection, localizing firing positions of incoming mortars and small arms fire • alerting and cueing radars towards hostile firing positions • sound ranging, localizing hostile artillery and rocket launchers firing positions • target practicing Stand alone capabilities include foremost: • gunshot localization The aforementioned capabilities can be enhanced by another sensor node platform, the so called Acoustic Pointer, into the network. The 3D acoustic vector sensor node can be installed on a fixed wing drone taking headwind.

A fantastic job by my Engineering Development team and 🏴Matthew Morgan Cyber and Intelligence team to integrate a range of equipment with our SME partners leading to a successful exercise with UK MoD. Jacobs played a central role in a UK Ministry of Defence exercise designed to break new ground in networking of drones and robotic systems. Project Acheron, organised by Defence Equipment & Support’s Multi-domain Integrated Systems game changer programme, tested new integrated command, control, communications, and network architectures for use by all the armed services. We supplied an eight-wheeled autonomous vehicle, smaller tracked ground vehicles, aerial drones, as well as a suite of connected microphone arrays, both dismounted and integrated into the UGVs. Using a Jacobs-built integrated network and network architecture, feeds from all assets could be viewed on one screen, enabling faster decision making and full situation awareness of deployed platforms. The Jacobs team operated at Royal Marines Barracks Chivenor near Barnstaple, for an exercise which simulated an unopposed shore landing by Royal Marines Commandos, who then used the platforms for surveillance, reconnaissance of the surrounding terrain and a teleoperated cache resupply drop for advancing troops. Simultaneous exercises took place at two other training bases in different parts of the country to provide a truly disparate example of how feeds from different assets can be received and utilised. George Stone, Jacobs Project Manager said: “The multi-domains aspect was an important part of the exercise. We had representatives from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force as well as suppliers all working alongside each other. “This is the first time that information from sensors on multiple autonomous systems has been available to view by everybody on one screen. It was really a game-changing demonstration of the capability that emergent technologies can deliver.” All images courtesy of SNC Mission Systems UK.
