Novel Approaches for Energy-Efficient Computing of the Future

Over ons

MISSION 10-X is a collaborative effort initiated by University of Twente (UT), Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and Radboud University, Nijmegen (RU) targeting a radical reduction of energy use in Information Technologies, in combination with developing computing for the future. In combination with both private and academic partners, new ways for computing - systems technology, architectures, data applications, devices and materials - will be explored and applied. The energy consumption of today’s IT presents a key bottleneck for computational systems going forward. This applies to all sorts of computationally driven systems, such as data centers, local computational nodes that require lots of data transport activities or edge computing. Without significant technological steps, IT systems worldwide will hit the fences of environmentally unsustainable energy levels – or are meanwhile doing so. On a 10 years' time scale, orders of magnitude gain in energy efficiency are needed to keep up with increasing demand for IT and to unlock new functionalities. This calls for radical breakthroughs in both hardware and software, involving novel materials, devices, circuits, architectures and applications concepts.
