CSRD: Optimizing Corporate Strategy with Integrated Finance, Risk and Climate Data – Mount Table Event On November 14, Mount Consulting hosted a second Round Table, on ESG Reporting and Climate Risk Management in our offices in Utrecht. In line with our CFO, CRO and CDO focus, this edition’s theme was on the integration of finance, risk and climate data meeting CSRD requirements. Will financial institutions combine ESG metrics with financial performance metrics and data on risk weighting assets to steer their investment and loan portfolio, to meet its published ESG objectives. Key stakeholders – ESG Reporting as well as Climate Risk Management experts – of AEGON, ASR, dVB, ING, MUFG, NN, and Morningstar Sustainalytics shared insights and debate best practices integrating ESG Reporting and Climate Risk Management in their respective finance and risk environment. A series of short, thought-provoking presentations on the complexity of CSRD, the availability and quality of internal as well as market data, and the elements of an effective operating model, guided the participants in their discussions on the most challenging subjects. Top 5 Takeaways: 1️. Complexity of CSRD: The current CSRD regulations are too complex. In line with recent statements on the overburden of ESG regulations (e.g. Mario Draghi in his September report on European Competitiveness, or Morningstar CEO Kunal Kapoor during the Morningstar Sustainable Investing Summit of November 7-8 in Amsterdam), simplification of CSRD is needed, especially given the variety and amount of data required. 2. Governance Gaps: Governance is still a struggle. Overall, ESG/CSRD programs are managed by a specific Sustainability Team, while ESG/CSRD reporting is assigned to Finance.s In contrast to IFRS or Pillar III driven reporting requirements, for ESG reporting, the whole organization must be involved. 3. Beyond Compliance: More and more, ESG reporting is evolving beyond just being an obligation. Metrics are growing to be used to underpin business decisions and forecasting, and are included in sales/acquisition processes. The quality of the first CSRD report and related questions in investor calls will impact further progress. 4. Hurdles in Data & Systems: Both availability of ESG data and the flexibility and comprehensiveness of the as-is reporting architecture are still main hurdles for effective ESG reporting and monitoring. Organizations must strive to enable ESG reporting and climate risk management from an integrated finance and risk architecture. 5. Towards Unified Data Platforms: Data platforms have been extended for ESG reporting. Unambiguous and single use for data provision and consumption is the next objective. 📩 Interested in the full insights? On August 20th, I successfully defended my bachelor thesis, titled "Cijfers liegen niet," earning a grade of 8.3. Alongside this achievement, I also completed my graduation internship at Mount Analytics. My research focused on the applicability and predictability of Financial Sentiment Analysis to uncover trends in annual reports from Dutch banks. By utilizing the FinBERT model, I analyzed extracted text to conduct various analyses and gain insights into financial reporting. I want to express my sincere gratitude to Jurriaan Groot for his incredible guidance and insights throughout this journey. I would also like to thank the Mount Consulting and Mount Analytics team for their support and for creating such a welcoming and enjoyable environment for my internship, filled with weekly borrels, coding challenges, and great memories. Completing my bachelor’s degree is a significant milestone, made even more rewarding by my roles as President of the African and Caribbean Heritage Network and Sponsorship Manager at The STEM Embassy Embassy. As I close this chapter, I am excited to further train and fine-tune my skills in AI, preparing for the next step: pursuing a Master’s degree. 🦾
