Join the guest lecture by visiting Professor Karel Martens on transport justice versus modeling, optimization and AI ⭐️ The development of mathematical foundations for justice in transportation systems requires a careful definition of what is meant by ‘justice’ before turning to the mathematical foundations. Martens, Full Professor of Transport Planning, will discuss how justice could be understood in transport, the philosophical argument developed in his book ‘Transport Justice’ and will finally apply this sufficiency principle to the assessment of the transport systems in 49 large US metropolitan areas. Tese de alumnus do Técnico distinguida pela Associação Portuguesa de Controlo Automático Leonardo Pedroso, alumnus de Engenharia Aeroespacial do Instituto Superior Técnico, foi distinguido com o ‘Prémio APCA Dissertação de Mestrado 2024’ pela Associação Portuguesa de Controlo Automático (APCA). Esta distinção é concedida bienalmente pela APCA à melhor dissertação de mestrado em Controlo Automático e áreas científicas relacionadas. “É uma grande honra ver a minha dissertação de mestrado reconhecida”, partilha o estudante, agora a realizar um doutoramento na Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). O trabalho laureado tem como título “Controlo descentralizado e distribuído de sistemas de grande escala com aplicação a mega-constelações de satélites em órbita terrestre baixa” e levou o alumnus a desenvolver algoritmos de controlo para redes de sistemas de grande escala, que foram validados numericamente com o controlo de posição de uma mega-constelação de satélites. In relation to our previous post on optimal endurance race strategies, we are delighted that our new paper "Model Predictive Control Strategies for Electric Endurance Race Cars Accounting for Competitors’ Interactions" has been accepted and published in the latest edition of the IEEE Control Systems Letters (L-CSS). This work authored by Jorn van Kampen is based on the master's thesis of Mauro Moriggi and is a joint collaboration between our research group of Mauro Salazar and the group of Francesco Braghin at the Politecnico di Milano. In this letter, we focused on an adaptive race strategy for fully electric endurance race cars. During an endurance race, many events can happen, such as competitor overtakes and safety cars. Each of these events can result in a deviation of the optimal race strategy, leading to potential time loss. To account for this, we leverage our race strategy optimization framework (see https://lnkd.in/gP3v7b7M) and apply it in an online MPC fashion to adjust the strategy during the race if needed. Moreover, we devised a decision making algorithm regarding interactions with competitors. The latter is another crucial aspect in electric racing, since overtaking competitors is a continuous trade-off between time gains and battery energy usage. As we show in our letter, it is sometimes better to stay behind the competitor and save energy, leading to a difference of 21s on a 1h race.
