What is the difference between climate mitigation and climate adaptation❔ Climate mitigation is the human intervention that reduces the emission of greenhouse gas to prevent the planet from warming to more extreme temperatures.🌡 Climate adaptation is the process of adjusting to the current and future effects of climate change.🌍 Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) have an important part to play in adapting to the impacts of climate change and in sequestering and avoiding emissions. Nature-Based Solutions include: 🏞 Avoiding emissions through protecting landscapes 🌱 Restoring ecosystems such as drained peatlands 🕊 Bringing ecological diversity into landscapes dominated by singular species 💧 Creating more room for water to reduce flood risk 🏡 Better integrating nature into urban areas and agricultural landscapes For practical examples, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/gJ87h-B #NatureBasedSolutions

🌍 While the term Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) has been popularized in the Global North over the last few years, researchers note that communities in many parts of the world have engaged in these practices for centuries. In the study 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: 𝗔 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 the different forms of NBS currently practiced in informal settlements in Southeast Asia and the Pacific were quantified and analyzed. 37 implemented NBS in the region were identified, initiated by governments, institutions, NGOs, and communities themselves. They varied in complexity and took many different forms: 🦢 Constructed wetlands 👩🌾 Community gardens 🏞 Open green spaces 🌾 Restoration of riparian vegetation 🌳 Street trees 💧 Infiltration devices like trenches and rain gardens to manage stormwater runoff. Community gardens were the most popular intervention, followed by waterfront vegetation restoration. For more information, visit: https://lnkd.in/g9R4w3cb Or contact Erich Wolff #NatureBasedSolutions

How are countries integrating Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) in their National Adaptation Plans (NAPs)? 🌿 📘 The report 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 (𝗡𝗯𝗦) 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗘𝗯𝗔) 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗔𝗣 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 developed by NAP Global Network & International Institute for Sustainable Development assesses the extent to which countries have integrated NBS, EbA, and biodiversity considerations into their NAP documents. The findings are based on a review of 57 NAP documents: ▶ 40 / 57 countries include information and data about the climate risks and vulnerabilities that their ecosystems face from climate change. ▶ 44 / 57 countries made explicit reference to NBS & EbA. ▶ 49 / 57 countries identify at least one priority sector related to ecosystems, biodiversity, or the environment. ▶ 49 / 57 countries refer to the links between climate change and biodiversity loss.
