  • 🚀 Twente is ready to launch microchip talent initiative💰 The Dutch cabinet has approved €20.5 million for Twente's Beethoven Plans as part of the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 for 2025-2026. The region can start educating additional talent for the microchip sector in MBO, HBO and WO. €72 million has been reserved for the Twente plans. Based on a positive interim evaluation (every two years), the remaining budget will be allocated. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁🚨 Investing in the microchip sector is crucial for the Netherlands economically and socially. ASML, a global leader in chip technology, aims to grow, requiring the entire chain, including Twente, to expand. Companies like VDL Enabling Technologies Group (ETG) Almelo, Demcon, other key suppliers, and manufacturing facilities like New Origin, play a vital role in this process. Growth requires investment in technical talent: educating Dutch talent, attracting international talent, and retraining employees. Few students choose technical studies, leading to a shortage of skilled personnel and rising vacancies, which hinders the chip sector's development and threatens our global leadership. • Last week, our own Twan Korthorst was honored to moderate a panel session about “The role of chiptech in modern medicine” during the annual MedTech Twente week. Together with Albert van den Berg, Ronald Dekker and Martin Bennink he facilitated a lively discussion with great participation of the audience about #MEMS, #microfluidics and #integrated #photonics technologies for applications in #ultrasound, #personalizedmedicine, and point-of-care diagnosis. The importance of developing platform technologies to drive down cost and shorten development times and scalable manufacturing was highlighted to further the adoption of chip technology. New Origin is looking forward to contributing to this! 🙌

  • 🚀 Major Boost for Photonic Chip Technology in Twente! 🚀 Last Friday, the Provincie Overijssel announced that New Origin will receive support for the further development of our production facility. Yesterday, the Ministerie van Economische Zaken revealed that €15 million from Europe will be available for #twente to establish a pilot plant for photonic chips. The University of Twente will use this investment to modernize equipment at the MESA+ Nanolab, enabling a faster transition from research and development to production at New Origin. As Guus Rijnders mentioned in De Twentsche Courant Tubantia, “If the prototypes we create at the UT perform well, the aim is for New Origin to produce them in mass. It all connects together.” 🤝 As Twan Korthorst in Het Financieele Dagblad said: "These developments are great news for New Origin and the ChipTech Twente cluster, bringing our ambition to start rolling out photonic chips by late 2026 a big step closer. The European funding will lower barriers to adopting this new technology, encouraging increased activity and demand for production capacity. Here in Twente, we’ve been working on photonics for over 30 years, with various companies like LioniX International, Brilliance RGB, ALUVIA, Epiphany and QuiX Quantum actively paving the way to bring photonic chips to market.” #Photonics #ChipTechTwente #NewOrigin #Innovation #TechForEurope #FutureOfChips #Twente

  • The mood in the Dutch and the European integrated photonics scene has been changing. After years of confidently touting a technological lead, these days figureheads issue words of warning: if we don’t act soon, the US and China may run off with the loot. Twan Korthorst, along with many partners, is taking a step forward: "I’m convinced silicon nitride is a great niche catering to a unique set of applications. Or rather: a niche of a niche, because we really need to start talking about integrated photonics as a part of the semiconductor industry. Integrated photonics and electronics are natural allies rather than competitors, after all.” Read this in-depth interview with Twan Korthorst: https://lnkd.in/e6UtuWN4 #integratedphotonics #photonics #neworigin
