Openbaar bestuur
We develop new approaches to an open internet that maximize societal benefits of shared data, knowledge and culture.
Over ons
At Open Future we shape today’s digital policies with tomorrow’s challenges in mind. We put our knowledge and experience to work along EU institutions and civil society to ensure that the principle of openness is reflected in the European Union’s digital policy framework. We believe that Europe has a mission to keep the internet open and make it better. To rebuild it, so that it is a place governed by equal opportunities, democratic access to information and respect for fundamental rights. A public space built on the idea of the commons. We work on advancing Digital Public Spaces, building Data Commons and designing the Future of Open. We do this by developing approaches to open that maximize the societal benefits of information resources. The current European policy environment provides a real opportunity to realise these objectives by enacting meaningful legislative change. At the same time we are also setting our sights on developing initiatives for the next European Commission to take up.

🤖 Open Future and Fundacja Centrum Cyfrowe’s latest research provides ideas on how to support #opensourceAI and #publicAI globally, learning from cases of small language model development in Poland: SpeakLeash | Spichlerz and PLLuM (Polish Large Language Model) initiative. The publication is written by Alek Tarkowski (Open Future), Kuba Piwowar (Fundacja Centrum Cyfrowe) and Michał Owczarek (Uniwersytet SWPS). This report highlights how #digitalcommons can compete with commercial models and help fight concentrations of power in AI. 🔗 Read or download: https://lnkd.in/dE3XAV8e

🏗️ What is Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)? This opinion from our fellow Mila Samdub and Chand Rajendra-Nicolucci seeks to bring more specificity and clarity to the concept. “Multiple visions of DPI are circulating today: DPI-as-roads and DPI-as-radio, as well as other variations that don’t map quite so readily onto a single metaphor, including an ongoing European push for DPI as systems to support regional sovereignty.” https://lnkd.in/e-YPVDpu #DPI #DigitalPublicInfrastructure #DigitalCommons

📝 Did you know that "AI speaks Polish" and does so openly? As generative AI technologies advance, there are growing concerns about the concentration of power and the unequal distribution of its benefits. While big players continue to dominate, there are examples of digital commons for AI. Our latest research report is a study by Alek Tarkowski (Open Future), Kuba Piwowar (Fundacja Centrum Cyfrowe) and Michał Owczarek (Uniwersytet SWPS) on the ecosystem of open language models in Poland, focusing on the Polish initiatives SpeakLeash | Spichlerz and PLLuM (Polish Large Language Model). These cases of small language model development are examples of a public AI approach: building infrastructure for the public good and with the public orientation of AI in mind. They also show how a broader ecosystem has emerged around these initiatives. We hope that this analysis will be relevant for debates on how to support open source and public AI globally. 🔗 Read or download: https://lnkd.in/dE3XAV8e #OpenSource #DigitalCommons #PublicAI
