Grids remain a priority in 2025 as the energy sector shifts from the Green Deal to the Clean Industrial Deal. The EU DSO Entity's Annual Work Programme 2025 analyses the role of the DSOs in achieving the EU’s 2030 energy and climate targets. While the broader strategic priorities are still to be defined, the DSO Entity anticipates continued growth in its activities. The latest quarterly European Commission Directorate-General for Energy report on European electricity markets confirms a steady shift toward renewables. In Q3 2024, renewable energy made up 47% of the power mix, with solar and wind generation growing by 11% year-on-year. Solar power alone rose by 23%, reaching a record 87 TWh. Hydropower and offshore wind also saw strong gains. Fossil fuel generation dropped to a historic low of 165 TWh, falling 11% year-on-year. Coal-fired generation declined by 13%, and gas generation fell by 14%. Meanwhile, nuclear output increased by 8%. Electricity prices continued to decline. The European Power Benchmark averaged 78 €/MWh, down 8% from last year. Household electricity prices in EU capitals fell by 6% year-on-year. GEODE - The voice of local energy distributors across Europe presented its latest factsheet “Energy Communities: A DSO Approach”. Energy Communities (ECs) are changing how we produce and manage energy. They argue that by bringing together citizens, businesses, and local governments, ECs are key to shifting from fossil fuels to clean, decentralized energy. European low-voltage (LV) grids are at a turning point. As more homes adopt EV chargers, heat pumps, and solar panels, distribution system operators (DSOs) must shift from passive oversight to Active Distribution Network Management (ADNM).
