From Ocean Enthusiast to Mother Reef Steward: Meet Stefaan! 🌊 Since childhood, Stefaan has always aquatic life. He was fascinated by ponds and always kept aquariums, mesmerised by how tiny ecosystems maintain their delicate balance. “𝙄 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙦𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙪𝙢 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙨𝙚𝙚𝙠𝙨 𝙗𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚. Oyster Heaven is één van de tien genomineerden voor De Nationale Ondernemersprijs. 🏆 Door overbevissing, ziekte en vervuiling is 95 procent van alle oesterriffen in de Noordzee verdwenen. Zonde, want oesters filteren het water en zorgen ervoor dat we droge voeten houden. Het Rotterdamse bedrijf Oyster Heaven herstelt de riffen. Oprichter George Birch, MBA (34) zet dit jaar 12 miljoen babyoesters uit. "Een oester filtert elke dag 200 liter water en haalt onder meer stikstof uit oceanen. Hun riffen vormen ook een leefgebied voor de vissen die op onze borden belanden. Oesterriffen zijn daarnaast golfbrekers, die kusterosie en overstromingen voorkomen. Ze zorgen ervoor dat onze huizen niet onder water komen te staan. We plaatsen babyoesters op zelfontworpen, biologisch afbreekbare kleiblokken en leggen die met tienduizenden tegelijk op de zeebodem. Zo herstellen we de riffen." Today, we are giving you a glimpse into our ongoing feasibility studies in the UK with our partners from Exo Environmental. Featured here is one of our pilot projects in North Norfolk a few weeks ago at an intertidal site managed by Norfolk Seaweed, where we’ve deployed 12 of our Mother Reefs, for short-term monitoring of oyster growth (6 months). The results so far? The oysters are thriving! 🙌 We continue exploring various sites, conducting tests, and collecting crucial data on oyster survival, growth, and predation to help refine our restoration methods. 🦪 #OysterReef #MotherReefs #UKConservation #ExoEnvironmental

For example, a single oyster filters 200 liters of water daily, supports diverse marine life, and protects shorelines from erosion. We are proud to share that we have been awarded a €199,040 grant as part of the Zeeland in Stroomversnelling (ZIS) innovation scheme by the Provincie Zeeland ➡️ Under this call, seven innovative projects contributing to the sustainability and economy of Zeeland have been selected for support. Together with our wonderful partners Stichting Zeeschelp, HZ University of Applied Sciences , and Palinghandel Van de Kreeke, we will demonstrate the potential of large-scale oyster reef restoration in the Zeeuwse Delta over the next few years. ➡️ This funding supports us in realising our pilot oyster reef in the Veerse Meer, showcasing not only its ecological benefits but also its value for fisheries and oyster aquaculture in the region. By restoring native oyster habitats, we aim to enhance biodiversity, improve water quality, and create sustainable economic opportunities.
