In collaboration with Philips Engineering Solutions, we’re developing the Recycling Assessment Tool (RAT) under the INCREACE initiative. This powerful tool helps determine the recycling rate of electrical consumer products and highlights areas for improvement. It’s a step forward in supporting product developers to incorporate Design for Recyclability into their creations. One exciting application? Daikin Europe asked us to assess their Altherma 3 H MT ECH₂O heat pump. Our goal: evaluate its recovery potential and raise awareness about recycling practices and design implications. And the process? Let’s just say that disassembling parts and analysing construction methods often reveal fascinating insights—sometimes even picture-worthy moments like this one. Together with Philips teammates Mark-Olof Dirksen and Sharina Ligtelijn, and PEZY’s Thijs Feenstra and ✍️ Michiel Henning, we’re developing something game-changing for recyclability: the Recyclability Assessment Tool (aka “The RAT”) for electronic products. This powerful tool is almost ready to roll out, giving product developers a way to predict recycling rates for current products—and even more crucially, for late-stage concepts. Why does this matter? Because now Design for Recycling has a seat at the table, right next to feasibility, viability, and desirability. Think a 75% recycling rate is the target? Then we’re talking about smarter design choices that balance all requirements. Last week, we shared first insights at the Circular Design Forum (CDF) with an enthusiastic response. Hold tight—we’re aiming for a 2025 launch.
