It was recently announced that the Netherlands will benefit from a substantial investment in the photonics industry by the EU. Out of a total investment of 380 million Euros across the European Union, the Netherlands will receive a share of 133 million Euros for the development of a pilot photonic chip factory. PhotonFirst has not been closer to space than last summer. Thanks to the efforts and ambitions of the students of Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, teamed up in Aster in Space, our technology went to a near-space altitude of 34.8 kilometers. The goal was, among others, to test our Fiber Optic Sensing technology in a near-space environment on a prototype satellite. We can state that the mission was successful, effectively testing both the satellite's resilience and the functionality of PhotonFirst's FBG sensor technology under near-space conditions. Did you know that our Fiber Optic Sensing solution went into space last summer? Aster in Space used our interrogator connected to Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors on their Icarus, a prototype satellite that reached an altitude of an amazing 34.8 km's using a high-altitude balloon. While in flight, the interrogator was able to measure details such as temperature, pressure, radiation, and mechanical stress. All at the same time.
