Big news from Planet B.io member Vivici today! The Dutch startup, backed by biotech multinational dsm-firmenich and dairy multinational Fonterra, has raised €32.5 million in a Series A funding round. Vivici uses precision fermentation to produce dairy proteins - which combines traditional fermentation processes with modern biotechnology. The technology enables the production of high-quality proteins without the use of animals, sustainably meeting the protein needs of a growing global population without compromising on cost, taste, or nutritional value. The funding round was led by APG and Invest-NL. InnovationQuarter also participated, alongside existing shareholders dsm-firmenich and Fonterra. With this investment, Vivici aims to expand internationally, launch a second dairy protein ingredient, and build long-term production capacity. 🥳 Congrats team Vivici! Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting Yulia Efimova for an insightful Let’s Talk B.io lunch seminar on the regulatory landscape for bringing innovative food products to the European market. With over 15 years of experience in the food and biotech industries, Yulia shared valuable expertise on navigating EU Novel Food regulations, safety dossiers, and compliance with labelling and GMO requirements. Here are some key takeaways from her presentation: ✅ 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥: Consider regulatory steps simultaneously to initiating R&D or process development. ✅ 𝐈𝐏 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥: Transparency regulations require some open data in your novel food dossier, so secure confidentiality early and strategically. ✅ 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬: The European Food Safety Authority offers helpful resources and services. ✅ 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬: Ensure minor changes are internally assessed and documented as improvements to prevent a new approval procedure. However, authorities might challenge you and require new approval. ✅ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐒: Expect some regulatory updates in 2025, with the question about GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) and possible updates. ✅ 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: EFSA’s toxicity study requirements have been streamlined, but costs remain significant. Leveraging the “safe strain lineage” concept or the use of QPS safe microorganisms can reduce future regulatory hurdles. Yulia’s advice: 🔹 Read all guidance carefully before applying for Novel Foods. 🔹 Protect your data by integrating as much as possible into your IP. 🔹 Use available EFSA support during evaluations, check EFSA's Catalogue of support initiatives during the life‐cycle of applications for regulated products. 🔹 Check available EFSA evaluations for similar products. 🔹 Join relevant food industry trade associations. An industry trade association participates in public relations activities such as advertising, education, political donations, lobbying and publishing, and its focus is collaboration between companies. What are your thoughts on these takeaways? Do you have additional tips or experiences with regulatory processes? Share them in the comments below! #RegulatoryCompliance #NovelFoods #FoodInnovation #Biotech #PlanetBio #Innovation
