*The Blue Screen of Death: A Wake-Up Call ⏰ for Operational Resilience. 🖥 The major outage last week, triggered by a faulty update from CrowdStrike, underscores the need for operational resilience (let's not mention #DORA). This externally driven event caused significant IT disruptions globally. ⁉ While protection against cyber threats is crucial, this incident raises questions: is the remedy worse than the disease? How does the impact of a vendor update differ from a malicious attack? Was it an unforeseeable scenario, which we couldn’t plan for? ☎ The root cause—a faulty software update (Kernel config update)—led to computers displaying the “blue screen of death”. An estimated 8.5 million computers (only Microsoft computers) were affected, bringing many operational processes to a sudden halt. Airlines, airports, hotels, hospitals, and more were industries were impacted, with damages estimated in the billions of dollars. The rollback and fix were completed within hours, but affected computers required a manual fix slowing down the resolution time. 📉 CrowdStrike's market value has dropped by $25.4 billion, its reputation took a hit and competitors are seizing the opportunity. In response, CrowdStrike will likely enhance their patching process to reduce future update issues, but the damage is already done. 🕵♂️ 🕵♀️ Understanding the cause and effect is important, but focus is required on the response. This is the essence of operational resilience 🛑: prevention is key, but unexpected problems will occur. Hydrogen (H2) can play a major role in the energy transition. But large investments are required to position H2 as the energy carrier and storage facilitator for renewable energy. Together with Invest-NL and Common Futures. Energy Transition Specialists; Porteg investigated the possibilities of a H2 trading market in the Netherlands and the role of the trading market as an accelerator for these investments. A H2 trading hub, defined as a centre of trading activities, will need core elements to be in place similar to trading in other energy commodities. These elements are not fully crystallized and should mature rapidly. Examples are: Standardized product, Contract definition required for trading and Transparency on flexibility including pricing mechanisms. In the next phase the results of our investigation with stakeholders and participants are validated. Using interviews, we would like to find out the needs of the participants and stakeholders and validate our findings and assumptions. Are we ready for a H2 trading market?
