Think working on an underground bore is boring? Just wait until you read this.
Most Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) projects are carried out from one point on land to another. However, for this project, executed by LMR Drilling GmbH, a pipeline was built from onshore to offshore.
📐535m of challenges
Starting at an entry point on the Tweede Maasvlakte in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the trajectory crossed multiple pipelines, two major roads and a sea defense, before exiting in a 75m pre-dredged trench on the seabed at a depth of 16m below sea level.
🚢Why?
Porthos is developing a brand new infrastructure to collect and transport CO₂ from Rotterdam’s port industries and store it in depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea. HDD was chosen to minimise disruption to the seabed while ensuring uninterrupted shipping operations.
🌊Special feature
To enable the cathodic protection on the steel product pipe, an impressive 2300 no Ø 36 mm holes were drilled in the PE-pipe and plugged with an Allen bolt, allowing current to pass through the otherwise insulating pipe.
