The world port accelerator - innovation driver in the green energy, logistics, maritime & process industry.

Over ons

PortXL is the World's Port Innovator. Since 2015, PortXL has been committed to giving innovative (young) entrepreneurs a foothold in the maritime business world. In this way, we are working together to create a strong, future-proof port. Innovation is now a much-heard and popular word in the maritime sector. Every company does 'something' with it, some more than others. In practice, we at PortXL see that innovation is often also considered exciting. But the fact is: we can no longer ignore it. It is no longer a choice or a nice 'extra'; it is a necessity if we want to continue to exist together as a port, and as a port business sector. Exclusively selected start-ups will be accelerated during an intensive mentorship driven program located in the city of Rotterdam. Apart from training, PortXL offers an ecosystem of founders, investors and corporate partners that supports and accelerates the entrepreneurial journey. On the final closure day, the teams will pitch their business ideas to an audience of launching customers, business angels, venture capitalists, multinationals, journalists and sponsors. We don’t just accelerate startups. We innovate ports for sustainable growth

  • ⚡In the Start-Up Spotlight: RanMarine Technology (PortXL 2016)🔦 🥂𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗫𝗟 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝟭𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 In August 2024, #RanMarine launched the #MegaShark, a mid-sized, electric-powered autonomous surface vessel (#ASV) designed to revolutionise #aquatic #clean-up efforts. This innovative addition to our fleet is a testament to PortXL’s influence, providing a platform where bold ideas thrive and gain the momentum needed to tackle global issues. The rechargeable MegaShark, engineered for maximum efficiency, captures and removes floating waste, algae, and biomass from waterways. It boasts a 440kg waste capacity—over five times that of its predecessor, the WasteShark—and features advanced capabilities such as LiDAR-based collision avoidance, remote and autonomous navigation, and an 8- to 16-hour battery operation. Its unique catamaran hull and shallow draft ensure versatility across harbours, ports, marinas, rivers, canals, lakes, and more. Richard Hardiman, CEO and founder of RanMarine, reflects on the journey: “PortXL’s collaborative environment played a pivotal role in shaping our mission to restore and protect waterways worldwide. The MegaShark, our newest evolution of ASV, not only meets the rising demand for efficient waste collection but also supports our clients in understanding their environmental impact through advanced water-quality sensors and data feedback.” Our ASVs exemplify a holistic approach to waterway management by integrating clean-up operations with real-time environmental monitoring. Continuous data collection not only drives operational efficiency but also ensures compliance with critical regulatory frameworks, such as the EU’s Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the U.S. Clean Water Act. This dual capability empowers organisations to achieve tangible environmental improvements while fulfilling regulatory obligations. Since RanMarine deployed its first ASV from Rotterdam in 2016, the technology has gained traction globally across over 30 countries, with partners and clients including Walt Disney World, Hudson River Park Trust, PortsToronto, BIC Services, Port Halifax, and Dallas County. Together, these collaborations highlight the global demand for sustainable, data-driven solutions addressing the $20 billion waterway clean-up market. As we celebrate PortXL’s milestone, we extend our gratitude for its role in accelerating innovation and empowering impactful ventures. Here’s to another decade of driving progress, fostering partnerships, and shaping a sustainable future for our waterways and beyond.

By embracing nature-based tools, Medeina does not only reduce environmental costs but also provide solutions with tangible benefits for #urban #development. 💡After this local success, Medeina Engineering entered a strategic collaboration with Labmar Geociências in #Brazil. Their study resulted in compelling proof that worms can transform mine tailings into fertile ground for plant growth! 🚀 This is a major step toward using #nature-based solutions to reclaim contaminated land and repurpose mine tailings into productive, biologically active #soil. 📹 Video produced by Thiemo Dam, van #SustainableCities #SoilReclamation #GreenEngineering

  • Christel Pullens, director a.i. PortXL, was invited as a panelist for Data Driven Collaboration: Enhancing Efficiency and Resilience at Smart Maritime Network Rotterdam Conference 2025. Pullens, expert on #collaborative #innovation, believes that an essential part of innovation is stepping into the unknown, taking and bearing with the #risks that come with it. Pullens encouraged the conference participants to collaborate and share their data sets with one-another, even when it is unclear in the beginning how one will benefit from it in the end. Especially start-ups need access to data to test their solutions. PortXL thanks and congratulates Cathy Hodge for organising this great event, and Rob O'Dwyer for moderating the panel. • The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers: ICS Netherlands organized an insightful meeting on digitization in shipping; #innovation is one of the drivers behind this.  Speakers from NAVTOR, SHIPNEXT and Closelink were focusing on the #optimization of shipping routes and chartering options.  #FuelEU Maritime is coming up, so all optimization will help for shipowners and operators. PortXL was represented by the community manager Linda Treuman to focus on possible new partnerships and connections and to gain knowledge on ICS - where the #knowledge exchange is of upmost importance. Thank you @ICS Netherlands for the organization and we are looking forward to introduce other #maritime #start-ups to the community.

  • ⚡In the 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩-𝙐𝙥 𝙎𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩: Samotics (PortXL 2019)🔦 🥂𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗫𝗟 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝟭𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 The European Investment Bank (EIB) just backed Samotics with €𝟮𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 to accelerate the development of their technology from a leading monitoring system for individual assets into a comprehensive system that provides the data-fabric for the factory of the future. PortXL congratulates Samotics reaching this major milestone! --- Samotics (PortXL 2019) is eliminating equipment failures and energy waste in industry through AI-powered monitoring that spots problems months in advance and shows where and how energy can be saved. Unplanned downtime costs industrial companies millions. Traditional monitoring misses early warning signs that could prevent catastrophic failures. How it works: Samotics #SAM4 platform uses electrical signature analysis—capturing subtle changes in motors' electrical patterns to detect failures across the entire drive-train at a very early stage. This works for almost all types of industrial motors and rotating equipment, such as centrifugal pumps, propulsion systems, and ship-to-shore cranes. Imagine a maintenance engineer aboard a cargo ship. One day, the system detects misalignment in a critical pump. Thanks to SAM4’s early-warning alert - sent straight to his dashboard - the engineer is able to plan maintenance during a scheduled port stop instead of facing an unexpected breakdown at sea. This isn’t just about preventing costly downtime; it’s about empowering teams with actionable insights that keep operations running smoothly under even the most challenging conditions.
