On a super sunny - frosty day (-2 C but max 550 W) in the South of Germany these mini-cues were just pinched by premium propagator Gernert. The Southern European watermelon season is now in full swing, the pressed peat block in trays is an Italian specialty. However the roots of the pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima x mosschata) are cut off on the grafting moment; this powerful rootstock is back on track 5 days later... A sensitive balance between stretching leaves ( a too late acclimatization) and wilting leaves (a too early acclimatization) arises, 'reading' the plants becomes very important. Via guttation, vertical position of leaves and new roots the plants are telling you what's happening... or not happening!! Action is needed when one out of three is visible... Timings are so important when propagating vegetables, especially mini cues are super sensitive!! Just one day too late and they will stretch, topleaf on or off will influence shoot growth strongly, irrigation on the right moment to create healthy roots.... Yesterday in Greece @ Agris and today in Italy @ Innesti Leopardi its clearly visible that the watermelon season 2025 is starting in the Mediterranean area!! As being the most difficult vegetable plant to graft, the WM's need a lot of attantion. The sensitivity for humidity in the healing process makes it even more complicated. Luckily both companies have a lot of experience and are able to tackle this, so the plants are acclimatisized with the right timings. A bundle of joy today in the very professional nursery of Proplant (Ca)!! Outside cold (-5 C) and dark (<100 Joules) but inside it looked great, especially the tomatoes were doing their upmost driven by an excellent growth strategy. Very uniform shoots, nice dark color of the leaves and purple on the stems, compactness all over and the roots were super spread over the bottom of the block. And look at the hairs on the stem, means they are really enjoying!!! 😎🍅👍 #propagation #tomato #quality

In cold (-10 C) but sunny Leamington (Ca) these cucumbers were just pinched. The GLG-prop team did a great job keeping this powerfull growing variety under control!! They are nicely compact with short internodes, the yellow leaf borders implicate hard work meaning evaporation. The roots benefit from all this so they develop well. On track again for another productive crop under a lot of umols of the GLG-Leds!!! 😎🥒👍 #propagation #cucumber #quality

In NW-Europe the square meters for 'warm' vegetable propagation got limited over the past years and the pressure on it with the big wave of plants in December - January became much higher. Luckily the spacing machines aren't easy to 'catch', they can pick up several densities and space them wider again. So in stead of 1 spacing to final density there can be 2-3-4 spacings. This saves space / m2 but also demands a serious technical feeling of the propagator!! Plants can easily stretch, irrigation becomes a serious discussion point and with Led-lights they can be blocked when too many hours are ran on them... Over here the technical manager did very well as the plants stayed compact & generative but kept on growing!! 😎🍅👍 #propagation #tomato #quality

Cucumber season starts to run, also on a sunny day in the south of Germany at pioneer propagator Gernert. These single headed plants are ready early next week; today quite some sunshine so the lights were shut down > 200 Watt. The generative approach of the plants became even more clear when the lights were shut down, so they have: - short internodes; - 'zig-zag' leaf borders; - dark green leaves; - bubbles of assimilates on it; - heads pointing out of the leaves; - fruits initiated!!! At the end of last week I bumped into a wonderfull batch of eggplants at the German propagator Stader. Nicely compact plants with generative elements but also the right size of leaf area. It can always be bigger but this batch gave 'good feelings'!! In the South of Italy - Puglia region, growers want compact and powerful plants. This last point means a lot of assimilates but also a clear wish was to have the 1st cluster to be out completely!! @ Innesti Leopardi this succeeded really nicely on tables and in a plastic greenhouse.
